With an iron, does a person have to get closer to the ball vertically the more shaft lean they have?

if address, my hands are "x" distance away. if I have alot of shaft lean would my hands be "x-y" distance away or still just "x"?

Usually, your hands will be higher, further away and more forward. Doesnt mean its the best way or the only way. You can fit the hands in there a bunch of ways. Depends on the swing shape.

So does this mean they are higher on an arc than address so they end up the same distance away or actually farther away? I have a hard time picturing the club growing during the swing allowing for hands further away. If anything, the shaft droop alone would have to bring the distance between the ball and the hands closer.

I guess my main question is about the y axis only. I can see if the hands travel in arc beyond the ball where they would be the same distance away from the ball no matter the shaft lean but wouldn't they be closer to the ground than someone with very little forward lean?

Try this one on....

Most players have about 10° of forward lean when they only have 3° downward with an iron!

Is this due to aiming and "swinging" left. Lots of lean to compress the ball but the swinging left part is offsetting the amount of "down"
