Twist Away Question

The twist away has worked wonders for my iron game, but I am hooking the crap out of the ball with my driver. Any suggestions? Is this typical and should only be used for irons. My old iron swing miss was thin, weak fades. With the twist away I am hitting a very solid slight draw. My driver swing miss is a slight fade, but witht the twist away I am hooking everything.

What kind of a hook is it? Does it start left and hook more, or does it start to the right of the target and hook?

Twist away is a lot of medicine, why not just back off that thought a bit.

Answering questions:

Grip is slightly strong.
Ball starts right (I am lefty) and keeps going right.
I started using the twist away b/c it improved my iron play so drastically. I can hit my driver pretty straight without the twistaway, but it seems as though I would be having two distinct swings - twistaway for irons and "standard" for driver.

Could be an equipment issue. Is there anything funky or "anti-slice" about your driver? Plenty modern drivers seem to have a built-in hook bias - in terms of a slightly closed face, internal weight distribution or lie angle.

What does your 3 wood do?

Check and make sure that your ball position isn't too far forward first.

Try a quick check, grip a driver and grip an iron: using the Manzella-method of checking your grip - is your driver grip (right hand) stronger than your iron grip?

Coulda made this exact same post and probably made similar on a few occasions a while back.

It was very tough to work out the long club/short club issue.

It will be easier once your face is fixed and you can compress the ball (per-se) morseo with your short irons.

For now...one thing that helped me when using "Twistaway" ala NSA was to setup with lower hands. (like in SD)

See Johnny Miller. (for the setup- neutral grip and all I do believe)

Make sure your hands aren't TOO forward pressed as well. (a little probably is OK)

They will probably be apt to be moreso automatically. I find that when I think about using "NSA Twistaway" clubface control in the backswing (i.e. just standing over the ball at address preparing to make that swing) I tend to setup with the hands preset a little bit in that condition. (slight "forward press")

Check it out vs. if you were making a normal swing. See where you set your hands.

And shoot...if it works well otherwise (even as a temporary "stage"/"training") see if you can make small adjustments to make it work with the few clubs or shots that aren't working so well. (if it is only a few)

i.e. turn the face open and regrip it (at that same face angle) with your NSA neutral grip...

...or whatever.

It also helped me to take it back more with the right side. (1. "right shoulder takeaway"...and 2. in tandem with my right hip turn to start, which also had helped previously)

(all the right sided stuff totally totally didn't work before adding a right hip turn BTW...and using the shoulder more than the arm "anchors" it more to my body I believe)

Helped because:

(corresponding to the numbers above)

1. (I think) Less inside path.

2. LESS twist due to my right side "getting out of the way" (turning) better. When I start the turn with my left shoulder my right side is hesitant to turn I think...I tend to twist a lot and pop-out more.

3. Maybe some other stuff I am not sure enough about or not aware of. (and haven't seen video in a while either)

...

BTW- on 2., the effect would be like if you were trying your best to turn your left side but also trying your best to restrict your right side from turning. For me, I guess to "max out my potential range of motion" and loading (of wrists, accumulators, and whatever else- or whatever else you want to CALL it) I would also tend to inadvertently max out my "twist."

(which in itself I think adds "in-to-out" to your stroke BTW...vs. just swiveling the wrists)

Important toppppppppicccccccc!!

Driver is neutral to slightly open. I will check ball position. 3 wood hooks even more. I will try lower hands at set-up. I do not have a forward press.

Sounds like pulls and pull draw/hooks. May try more left side(axis tilt away from the target, left since you are a lefty) bend as Brian has suggested to help with pulls.
