Twistaway - Solution to Leakage hooks?

I was wondering if someone can help confirm what i found over a round on the weekend -

  • I was hitting my irons well, very very straight with no noticeable tail either left or right
  • My 3 wood mostly but also my Driver i was snap hooking - starting left of where i was aiming and hooking further left from about 100m out from the tee.
  • I'd been 'twisting away' with my irons using a manzella neutral grip or maybe a touch weaker than that. With my woods i didn't have as much 'twistaway' feel as i was always scared of my bad shot (a hook)
After losing numerous balls off the tee I hit a few good shots with my woods by what seemed to me doing the opposite of what i would normally think of (and after watching Never slice again) -
  • Moving to a slightly weaker grip than 'manzella neutral' and aggressively 'twisting away' on the backswing and downswing (i mean getting the club almost pointing at the sky at the top)
Shots were very solid, starting down the right side of the fairway and drawing back to right side of middle.

Now the thing that does my head in is that i have NEVER hit a slice!... and the shot i find most difficult to hit is a fade.

I'm thinking that the 'twistaway' helped with lag storage and allowed me to get into a better impact position to not 'leakage hook' my woods.

Am i on the right track here?

Cheers

You are someone who has a problem with an open face, for most people that means a lot of slicing. For some people, it means hooks cuz they are timing a flip.

Twist away works either type of person as you have clearly shown.

Thanks for the validation Jim!

It seems counter-intuitive that if you are hooking the ball that in some cases you may need to close the face more on the downswing!

It worked though !

It depends on the situation though, some people who are fighting a hook it is because they are genunie in the fact that they are swinging too far right and over swiveling the face. So a twistaway isn't going to help those people.

Flip is well ,FLIP. Twist away, well is what Mike Austin calls counter rotation.

You won't flip if it is held to impact . Now what I will say is this, for all those hookers. Test this. Hold the counter all the way to impact, but don't worry about keeping the right wrist bent past impact .

Smashing collision through the ball with your pivot and right arm. Allowing the forearms to roll. Let right arm thrust take the left wrist into the half flex position. Finish with this half flexed left wrist position at the finish.

The FEEL is like giving one your best upper cut punch. When you feel this and have the positions I speak. You will gain accuracy and a whole lot of
club head speed you only dreamed of.

I was impressed as i actually *slightly* faded a driver yesterday with twistaway with a full roll of the clubface. First driver i've ever faded!
