I'm just starting to learn about TGM (and very hopeful) and had a couple of questions that have been bugging me (especially now after several beers):
- The grip that seems to be commonly recommended in general is a slightly strong grip where the left hand pad is on top of the club and
the left thumb is slightly to the right of the shaft such that
the v points to the right shoulder. I find that this leads to a shut
face at the top of the swing if my left wrist goes flat. i.e.
if I hold my left hand out in front of me after taking this grip
and turn my hand such that the palm is facing down to the ground
and my left wrist is straight, the grooves are "shut" and not parallel to the ground. I've always had a problem with a really shut face at the top - am I missing something here? How does a slightly strong grip achieve a not shut position at the top of the backswing with a flat left wrist? Should I be putting my thumb on top of the shaft instead so that the grooves appear parallel? This seems to be what is considered a weak grip. I have never been able to figure out how you can make a strongish standard grip and have a flat left wrist at the top of the backswing without a completely shut club face (looks horizontal to the ground).
- The other thing I do not understand (and couldn't glean from past posts) is the following statement: Take impact fix where the right forearm is in line with the shaft and the right wrist is bent only
backwards. I think I have been reading that the right wrist does nothing besides this bend and alignment all throughout the backswing but I don't see how that is possible. If you went to the top of the backswing with the right wrist bent back but in line with the right forearm in line with the shaft - then wouldn't the club be pointing vertically when the right forearm was vertical to the ground? Is the shaft always supposed to be in line with the right forearm throughout the entire backswing?
I've just ordered the book so I don't have the benefit of trying to read it yet. Just hoping for some helpful tips.
Thanks!
