Um... I may have fixed the path!

Well, it's raining here today, so to get my golf fix I stopped at Golf Galaxy on the way home just to check the used club rack and hit a few on the simulator. Still been struggling with a massive hook, the result of a 9-12 degree in-out path and closed clubface. The path is pretty consistent, but the face varies from square to slightly closed to very closed. Anyways... was thinking today about the SD pattern and the no-popout takeaway. I kept thinking... I know my hands don't pop out, but what about the clubhead?

So I decided to try making the take away keeping the hands in and the clubhead as much outside the hands as possible. I had tried this before in passing, but this time I knew what I really trying to do. Trying desperately not to get the club stuck behind my hands early in the swing and the resulting over rotated forearm / underplane syndrome.

Well.. um.. how do I put this...

Within a few swings the path went from 9 deg in-out to almost dead zero. Shots were either straight with a very slight draw at the end, or a very easy draw (2-3 yards). I couldn't believe it. Swinging the club felt stupid simple. Now, I thought, maybe it's a fluke. Can I maintain the sweetspot feel (something that with the hook swing was dang near impossible)? Sure enough, place that pressure on the number three... it was there the entire way through. Talk about revelation!

Did I mention I picked up about 7-10 mph in swing speed... maxing at 114 (prior max was 104)?

As soon as the weather clears, I'm out to the driving range to video this sucker.

Here's another happy SD camper. :D

so for your new takeaway you thought of keeping the hands the same distance from the body as what they are at address and just turning into the right side. This allowed you to not over pronate and get club behind and shallow. Was that your thought, hands same distance as at address? I have see BM say this in some vids.

Actually, it was more a feeling of laterally pushing the club away and not allowing the right wrist to roll back in the process of not popping out. So, my problem seemed to stem not from the hands not popping out, but the club still popping in (if that makes any sense).

yes it makes sense, right wrist bend back early would lead to over rotated flying wedge, I believe. You are probably seeing the clubhead outside the hands when the left is arm is parallel now correct, and not rolled back behind you?

Correct. The club stays outside the hands until just past the point where the shaft is parallel with the ground. Then it feels as though it comes in-line with the hands, but never gets sucked behind. Watching the backswing in the mirror here at home, it results in a very orthodox top of the backswing position.

Vanilla Backswing

I think Brian feels that the SD backswing is the vanilla backswing. In the following thread he seems to indicate that "Up the wall" is not his preferred method:

I've always struggled with "sucking" the club behind my body on the takeaway. I've found that monitoring the amount the left arm "crosses" the chest, helps me to keep the club "in-front" of my body...
