Come on USGA, only 15 spots for this field. US open will be without Justin Rose, Ricky Fowler,Bill Hass, Bubba Watson, JB Holmes, Charlie Hoffman,Rocco,Andres Romero,Rod Pampling,Daniel Chopra,Johnathan Byrd,Woody Austin,And Pat Perez among others.

Lehman hit the USGA hard with his comments.

They gave the Euro field 11 spots. Weren't the top Euro guys at the Memorial too?

You guys have to be joking. The players on the PGA Tour have more opportunity to get in the majors than anyone in the world, you can't just give 20 or more spots because it's a strong field. Every other course for qualifying has 3 or 4 spots available. There hasn't even been a qualifier in Europe until 5 years ago, the first time they did it, a qualifier from Europe won the tournament (Michael Campbell). The Open Championship has a much wider qualifying procedure with qualifiers all over the world so in comparison the US players and Tour members have a great deal.

Lehman, the only player in modern times to play in the final pairing of four consecutive U.S. Opens, was thrilled to return to Pebble Beach. He felt badly for Rose and Fowler, and questioned by such a strong field received only four more spots than the recent qualifier in England for European Tour players.

“You have the Memorial, so you have all the top players are here, from both Europe and the U.S.,” Lehman said. “Justin Rose was here qualifying, Rickie Fowler is qualifying. I just feel to have 15 spots here is a slap in the face. It really is. It’s a real quality field.

“I just feel, if you’re going to err on one side or the other, err on the American soil,” he said. “More here, less there, versus more there and less here. That just doesn’t sit well with me. I think 11 spots over there is way too many.”

Well that's his opinion but I think it's erroneous, all the top players from Europe were playing the Memorial? Nonsense. Mentioning Justin Rose makes it seem a legitimate comment but you only need to take a look at the field to know that is a ridiculous statement. Every time there is a major one player or another is complaining about their cause. You can't just put the whole PGA Tour in each major, there are a lot of quality European Tour players that won't be playing any majors this year but Tom isn't complaining about World Ranking points is he?

can't believe this, it happens every year, it just shows how good the level of play is around the world and on tour.

Expand the number of spots and start the tourney on Wed. if need be. The US OPEN should be what it is - open to everyone - the PGA tour guys should all be in the field as they have earned the right without having to qualify. Last year Brian Gay failed to qualify for the US OPEN at the Memphis sectional and then won the Memphis St Jude tour stop 5 days later. It was a travesty he was not in the Open.

The cut-off date for top 50 in the world was May 24 - the day after the Byron Nelson.

I think the thought process was that the sectional qualifying started on May 24 and they wanted all their fully-exempt qualifiers set by then.

Ricky Fowler and Justin Rose are ranked 32nd and 33rd in the world and will not play in the US Open. Nothing right about that.

They weren't 32nd and 33rd at the start of the year though were they? If they had been they would be in. You can't please everyone and you can't just put form players in either.

Brian Gay missed the cut at last year's US Open.

Guys instead of talking about how many spots there are lets talk about Erik Compton qualifying for his first ever major. As he put it "Dreams do come true. 40 hole 3 hearts" and he is playing in the US Open. Two heart transplants later the guy is able to play professional golf at a high level

In April, alot of folks were bitching that the Masters was a closed shop and pointed to the U.S. Open as a better balance.

Now come June, folks want the Open to be more closed.

Basically, every week on Tour someone is going to be pissed off at who's in the field from an invite and telling everyone about it. This week it was the US Open qualifying and someone wrote about it. I guarantee there was some talk last week about Sam Saunders being in the field for the Memorial, except no one wrote about it.
