Using D plane for British Open style link courses

Everyone talks about the need to be able to play low flying AND low spinning shots.

So how is that achieved vis-a-vis the D plane?

Well, you'd need low launch (low Vertical Face, negative Vertical Path) and low spin (face and path cannot differentiate too much).

So, even though it would seem like a relatively shallow AoA with lots of forward lean to keep that Dynamic Loft low would be the "ideal" we generally see guys achieve a decent compromise with a little more downward Vertical Path (than the "ideal") and not quite as much forward lean, allowing for a controlled Vertical Launch, even with more spin than the "ideal."

Although, wasn't Watson a "picker?" So, maybe his success was partially related to that?

Just thinking out loud...

Watson was a high ball hitter but won so many opens because he hit it solid and was money from inside 100 yards. Paul Azinger mentioned that a lot yesterday that Watson hit it high but it was a powerful boring shot. That was the one thing I noticed the one time I saw Watson play in person, he hit it pretty high but it looked different than many other high ball flights.

Can you really adjust the backspin on a turf iron ball by anything other than swing speed? you can shoot that ball out at different angles that make the backspin have a different effect when it lands, sure.

2-3 extra clubs, swing slowly and the ball comes out low with less backspin traveling a similar distance that includes some roll at the end.
