Golf is not exactly an athletic sport because nobody really sweats in competition unless the weather is hot. It's more of a slo-motion grind.

I always thought that walking the golf course was part of the game while riding a cart was cheating and only for the lazy or decrepit. I've used a cart and found it frustrating with all the bouncing around. It was not satisfying considering that I played other athletic sports using my legs to run and jump ..!!!

I would prefer and do play only 9 holes walking, and when it's solo golf in the evening I play 2 balls so that it's like playing 18 holes (9 holes x 2 balls). Riding 18 is simply artificial and not in the spirit of the game.

Guys who only ride carts establish a fake handicap, because when they have to walk the course, their score skyrockets .. they just don't have the athletic physical stamina to perform. I consider golf cart handicaps bogus.

True golf is walking golf.

So riding in a cart is cheating but playing 2 balls is not?

Put down your protein shake and read the rules of golf.

I can't tell if you are a pot stirrer of just crazy.

Either way, it is entertaining:)

Steve T. SAY'S: "I always thought that walking the golf course was part of the game while riding a cart was cheating and only for the lazy or decrepit."

So much for the Champions Tour. All those cheating, lazy, decrepit players, who would want to watch them? You are soooo funny! but stupid tooo.

How about walking 18?

I'm from Texas, but have lived in Germany for the last 23 years. Everyone here, except a small few with physical disabilities that prohibit it, walks. Heck, at the course I work at we only have 4 carts that are available for rental.

I usually walk 9, but for the last 2.5 months took a cart due to a medical issue. Last weekend I was able to walk again. The cart is bouncy but quicker. When sharing with someone and our shots are on opposites sides, I definitely longed for walking.

The interesting thing here is that it has been proven that golfers walk just as much when they ride a cart as they do when they don't. Getting in and out of the cart all day long especially on cartpath only days, you can actually walk more when riding a cart than you would just walking directly to your ball.

I moved here from Central Ohio and found a foursome at
my new club. They were walkers. During our first round they warned me to plan on a
cart for the second nine. Mountain golf. They were right. Took me about a month
to build up the endurance to walk 18. We walked at least 4 rounds a week for 5 years.
Then I quit golf for 10 years.

When I started again the games I joined all rode carts, no choice. Last 3 years I have played
in a bi-weekly league that requires carts to speed up play. Clearly, I would play better golf
if I could walk. The reason is simple. I would be in better shape.

As to riding carts being against the traditions of golf, or whatever was pronounced by our
little buddy, I think they are critical to the survival of golf courses. They are a revenue source.
They speed up play. As the golf population ages, they are a necessity. Many courses are barely
hanging on. Carts aren't going away.

Unless there is a cast on my leg I am walking(and sometimes running). When a course forces a cart on me I always am tempted to leave the cart as far away from the clubhouse as possible and tell them it broke down when I get in. You cannot tell me it speeds up play except for really slow walkers.

Trust me there are some very, very slow walkers, and there are
many people who for a variety of reasons must take a cart, or not play
the game.

What really bugs me in our league are the guys that don't have enough sense, or are too
lazy to get out of the cart grab some clubs and walk to their ball so they can be ready to hit.
We try to finish in 4 hours and 15 minutes. There are always 3 or 4 groups that finish
45 minutes to an hour after the rest of the groups. I help with the scoring, and we sit there
scratching our heads wondering how in hell it can take them so long.

Wooaaaah. You're making a few bombastic claims that are wrong.

"...while riding a cart was cheating and only for the lazy or decrepit."

What about those of us who cannot walk anymore due to medical reasons? Am I "lazy"? I guess I may be decrepit because I was inflicted with a lung disease ~5-6 years ago even I never smoked a day in my life. How would you like to live with 40% lung capacity?

What about the fact one has NO choice on many courses other than to use a cart? Should we play only cheap munis? (Example: South Park GC or North Park GC, Pittsburgh - $20, assuming you want to get up at 4am and sign-in at 5am) (NOTE: South Park GC is very, very hilly. Before my medical problem, I walked 36 holes there in the Summer. Ask Kevin or Matt about South Park. I walked Quicksilver in <3 hours a few times.)

"Guys who only ride carts establish a fake handicap.."

Wow. So, now I have a fake handicap? In addition to being lazy and decrepit? I play in a competitive tour here in Pittsburgh.. I played in 16 events in 2010 (all 1-day events except the Tour Championship and our 4-day tournament in Myrtle).

You have issues. You think I *want* to ride a cart? It effin burns me when goody-2-shoe types like you badmouth those of us who are not as fortunate as you are health-wise. You sound exactly like a guy who posts on the GC DB that has the same disdain for riders.

I play 75-80 rounds a year. I work with an Instructor that posts here often. Oh, did I say I'm almost 56?

I would strongly suggest you back-off your high and mighty perch. I'll bet you're a lot of fun to be around. Not.

I should add to my post. Several of my friends ride carts to play golf. They have very physical jobs and are anything but lazy. Fact of the matter is after working in the hot sun all day they want to relax and play golf. Carts do not ruin the game. They are just not for me at this time.

I think it's OK to use a cart if you have very little time and want to get around the course fast, however those who do that miss a lot of what golf is about. Those who use carts because of medical issues should also get to use them. However I think it's important that those with carts respect walkers and do not act as some kind of superior beings on the course! That has happened to me a few times.

KGlennCole, welcome to the conspiracy. It is SteveT's comeback to criticism. In this way he convinces himself that it's only a few hopelessly ignorant, ridiculous people that have no chance to understand his lofty dialog. For example, in essence, if you lose weight you will be more fit and play better golf. As if we didn't already no that! He ends a lot of his posts with condescending phrases like, "Ya Think?"

The problem with his theory is that the conspirators don't really
know each other, and new ones, like you, have the audacity to take him on.

It's narcissism of the highest order.

I can't walk. Carrying my clubs for 18 is no problem at all, but I can't carry a cooler full of beer and my clubs for 18....

My first 18 holes riding in a cart was when I was about 14 years old.

Lifetime scoring average since in a cart: +3.5 shots a round higher than a cart.

Of course, I was in my thirties before a made two pars in a row playing through groups.

I don't have a problem with carts or the people that need or are entitiled to ride in one. However, I do have a problem with the people who only get a cart to carry a cooler full of beer and ride around the course all day barely sober enough to stand and then they get in there car and DRIVE off! It's insane. Then later I'm checking the course and I find someone has spun donuts around in one of my traps... it angers me.

There should be a test you have to pass to show how responsible you are before you can even look at a cart.

Two weeks ago, since my league is over for the year, I decided to join a 9 O'clock game at the
local public course where I practice, but don't play.

I notice one of the guys in my foursome had popped a beer on the second hole. By the turn, this
guy had downed at least 4 beers, and turned into chatty Kathy. Not totally obnoxious, but getting there.
I watched his driving and his swing get worse. He was riding alone. There are some very dangerous downhill cart paths on this course. We made it through safely, but I must admit I was glad this guy was not in my group
on the following Thursday.

I personally don't drink, and play golf, but fine by me if someone else does in moderation.

On the cart topic, what I do is pick a hole to walk or choose to hit my approach shot and then walk to
the green with clubs and putter in hand. I do this throughout the round as the situation allows.

Another thought, Mister..

You said: "I would prefer and do play only 9 holes walking, and when it's solo golf in the evening I play 2 balls so that it's like playing 18 holes (9 holes x 2 balls)."

Then you said: "Guys who only ride carts establish a fake handicap.."

First, you're not playing 18 holes. You're playing 9 holes with 2 balls.

Second, *if* you post any of these scores, then who has the fake handicap? Hmmmm?
