warmup / stretches before playing?

I've been reading through the pages of brian's site for some time now. I guess now is as good'a time as any to make a post...(I'm Brian's cousin btw)

I am curious to know what some of yall do before playing a round to get warmed up? I typically do some light stretches, and then chip some balls(then 60% of the time hitting a small bucket on the range afterwards)

Reason I am asking is because lately I have been dealing with a back pain between my shoulder blades, particularly towards the left center of my back. I am wondering if I am not 'warming up' properly or if possibly I am just swinging the club wrong?

Lately, I've been playing 36-54 holes a week and hitting the range in the twice a week(separate from when I go to play).

Thanks,
Jon

I know some guys have been advocating not really stretching and doing only warmup swinging before the round but as my left shoulder and neck have been bothering me more I have gone back to really making sure I stretch well. (but as also was advocating- stretching smoothly and not stretching too hard)

I think it helps but have found it somewhat hard to gauge. The shoulder/neck are still a problem though. Hopefully I will get off my ass and pump up my frail shoulder/neck region this summer.

Well theres physical and mental warm up.

I usually swing three clubs as light as possible, touch my toes (no bouncing), then short irons, hybrids/3 wood, couple light drivers, mid irons and more drivers full.

Mental- use one ball on putting green and try and make as many three footers in a row.............
- range, never hit at targets, try to CLEAR targets (distance control better will lower scores faster)
my two cents

I wouldn't recommend this, unless you are squatting to touch your toes and not bending your waist. Forward bending with the lumbar spine before a physical activity increases the chances of a disc herniation.

Thanks for the insight.

So do more of yall just jump on the course without hitting balls first, or do yall spend some time on the range prior?

Well after spending some time at the range tonight, I paid closer attention to this particular back pain. It occurs right at impact for a moment then fades away as I'm finishing my swing. Just a little FYI...

At the mere age of 22, with grey hair and back pains, I guess it's getting close to retirement? ;)

The big question is how much time do you have- If possible - hit some balls and do just a few stretches-emphasizing any tight areas you have- esp the hips and shoulders but like birdieman you may also need to do the neck. Mix up doing a few key stretches and hitting balls then back to a stretch or 2- it's not just one or the other -

If you feel like you need a bit more warm-up, you are able and people don't think it's too weird then "pretend" you really need to "go" or forgot something at the car or clubhouse- and lightly jog about 100 yards. I have found this really works- it quickly gets your heart rate up without tiring you much. Then swing a few times-- try it you'll like it. :D
