Wedges....X-Tour or Volkey SM???

Happy with all my bag except wedges. Need some feedback on x-tour PM/Mac Daddy vs. Volkey SM. Also, vintage or chrome finish?

Thanks!

Obviously, it is all a subjective view that you will get. I have played both and I like both for different reasons.

I carry 4 wedges. 48, 52, 56, 60. I only carry a 60 in the MD's and 56 and 60 in Vokey SM. The other two are normal.

The MD wedges spin A LOT. They are tough on balls. They will peel the cover off of a Pro-V1X like a knife. When I first got mine I took them to the range and they shredded Top Flight range balls!! I have had mine since the summer and they STILL shred balls. I find them less than useful on full shots unless the greens are as hard as concrete. Hitting them into a sloped green with a full swing will usually pull the ball off the green. BUT......if you have a wet lie in the rough.......they are magic. Literally......they act like a shot off of a fairway lie. Out of dry rough they spin even better. Mine are the vintage finish as it fits my eye better. If you like hitting flop shots, the spin these things generate with a wide open club face is frightening.

I use my Vokeys SM's quite a bit more. Almost exclusively now. They don't spin as much, but they spin plenty for me. They will hurt a ball also, but they don't shred them like the MD's. It is a matter of trust I suppose. I know what the Vokeys will do most every time. I use the oil can in the Vokeys and I like the way the finish wears off and they get that nice patina. Also, for some reason, I get a little lower ball flight with the Vokeys which I like. The better trajectory may be because I have Project X in the Vokeys and not in the Callies.

You really need to hit both. I would imagine your club head speed and normal angle of attack will have a lot to do with how much spin you generate and the trajectory you get. One of the guys in my usual foursome has the Callies and he absolute loves them. He sold his Vokeys after he hit the MD's.

Both are high quality wedges and I think it all comes down to your swing and what you want your wedges for. If you use them for a lot of full approach shots, I would prefer the Vokeys. But if you do a lot of finesse stuff around the green and you like the pop and stop, the MD's are scary good at spinning the ball.

I play the Vokey SMs. I demoed the Srixon W-706 and I'm switching to the Srixons- forged, spin very well and don't shred the ball.

Just to update...

I got the Vokey SM in 54/10 and 58/08. Kept my 52* callaway forged + (that is bent to 50*). Got rid of my 5 wood.

I really didn't think wedges would make that much difference in my short game....(indian vs. arrow), but, in this case...they are a huge improvement. I am much more accurate with these new wedges. It's like my ball (golf) have brakes.

Thanks for the help with this. Glad I bought the vokeys. PS, got them on Ebay new for 59.00 each plus $8 shipping. They are authentic.

Congrats on a great purchase. The best thing i did last year was grab a SM Vokey 54/10*, my sand wedge play from various area's of the course definitely went up a notch. The spin is fantastic and as long as we don't get over seduced it is of significant benefit.

spin or checking. Not looking to spin 'er off the green. Just in love with the control.

I purchased a 52* Vokey SM and a 58* Vokey SM last summer, and I only kept them in the bag for about 3 rounds. Went back to my old Hogan wedge for awhile, until I hit the Callaway X-tour late last year. A 58* X-Tour is currently in my bag, but I'll probably upgrade to the new ones as they look good and my current X-tour has lost it's "juices".

The new Ping wedges (not good with names) looked much, much better than any of their past work in the wedge department. Had a chance to hit a few at the Demo Day on Wednesday and they're very nice. They have a deep selection of lofts to choose from.

The Tour-W wedges? I hope so as I just ordered a set of them along with some new S58 irons :).
