I bought some irons and now I'm looking to get some wedges. I have or will soon have a Driver,3,5,wood and 3-pw..it was the cheapest route. How many??What kind??Bounce??Loft? etc.etc. Thanks for your help..I promise I'll stop bugging you soon, especially when spring gets here:)

May I inquire the conditions of your course(s)? Meaning if the majority of the season the course is wet / long rough or even hard pan (or all the above lol). Also the type of sand the course has soft or firm. Ive had the Cleveland Cg12s (PW, GW, SW and LW), couldnt be happier. Good luck.

I don't have a course

I live in the midwest..its usually damp/soft here, depends on the summer. The courses Ill play are public courses.. I'd imagine the rough won't be crazy. Don't know about the sand...Sorry I can't be more helpful.

I live in the midwest in mostly damp conditions, too.

I carry one wedge with minimal bounce and another wedge with a lot of bounce. Here's why:

When it's wet, the greenside bunker sand gets compacted and you need minimal bounce to avoid hitting a drop-kick. If you get a hot day after a rain when the compacted sand dries up the sand becomes cement-like. Unless you play a pristine course, there is no doubt you will come across greenside bunkers that just don't have enough sand in them.

At the same time, you will need more bounce for wedge shots from the fairway, to reduce the tendency of digging on fat shots and to power through the wet rough conditions.

I have a 56 degree wedge that has 14 degrees of bounce and a 60 degree wedge with 6 degrees of bounce. I'll use the 60 degree from compacted sand whenever there is danger of drop-kicking the shot across 3 counties and I will use the 56 from the fairways or rough most of the time.

The top ones are all good.

I am a PING fan myself.

Find one that looks nice.

Get bounce sorted out...and something that's ground on the trailing edge and heel so you can open it up on tight lies without having the leading edge sit high off the ground with the club soled. Look at the soles and then (if you're in a shop) test soling the club on concrete to see how it sits. (DO NOT HIT BALLS OFF CONCRETE HOWEVER ;))

I've always liked a 54 and 60. To me the 54 fills the yardage gap better and I don't really have use for any extra loft in that club. (I have a 60 already)

Here's my set 4,5,6,7,8,9,48,52,56,60, Hybrid, 3 wood, Driver, Putter. I have a little gap between my 3 wood and hybrid and if I am playing a course that has some long par 3's in the 230 yd range I drop a wedge for a 5 wood. I would rather have a gap in my long clubs than in my wedges.

What is in an amateurs bag versus a pros.

I looked up set make-up for tour pros and most of them use a 3 wedge system. I guess this has to do with the fact that they get to practice most of the day. So, they are better at controlling distance..i.e. taking some off a shot or adding more yardage to a shot. I wonder if it would benefit amateurs more to use a 4 wedge system since we don't have all day to practice. That way we could just use 1 swing for most distances..say 130yards to 80 yards.
I would also reason that laying up would be easier with 4 wedges..I dont know.

You have to remember the pros are playing a lot longer courses then most amatuers. The average course length in my area from the tips is probably around 6500 yards. You have to go to the championship courses to get around 7000 yards but they are usually a lot more expensive to play. 6500 yard and less courses just don't require long irons, unless your going to lay up off the tee with an iron.

vj. . .what irons did you end up with?

I decided to go with the 98-02 Hogan Apex Blades. They were cheap..they look pretty and fit the bill interms of what Kevin Recommended. I got them thinking that maybe I can use them for a while until I get a more consistent with striking the ball. Then Ill get fit on a trackman and do it right. I also looked online at miura irons..and man those are beautiful, so Ill look into those next, but for now the Hogans will be fine.

If I were new to the game:

I wouldn't go anywhere near a long iron.

Driver... I don't do fairway woods .....3-7 hybrids -- 8----PW (real irons with real lofts) 50*PW, 55*SW medium bounce, 60*LW low bounce w/ a grind that allows you to spatula the club.

Lord you've picked an awful hobby;) Have you started to swing clubs in your backyard at 3am in the morning? Have you destroyed all the light fixtures in your basement, scuffed up the ceiling? You will!!!

I'm seriously thinking about quitting golf for tennis.

LOL...One busted light fixture in living room, 2 scuffs on ceiling, 1 scuff on wall and caught a flyer lie chipping into the lazyboy and put one hole in the drywall.

I can't say Im a purest yet, but I really like the look of blades...as I said they are pretty. I went to the big golf superstore in my area today and saw ALOT of ugly looking clubs, that said forged/blade on them. I think even when Im an old man Ill like the look of "traditional" blades and will play them. And to answer your question about my new HOBBY...yeah Im in trouble. I was up at 1:00 a.m. last night standing in front of a mirror practicing my start down move. The light was keeping my wife up and I got yelled at, and was told to come to bed. I felt like I was 15 all over again, getting TOLD to go to bed.:D
