What constitutes a "Full Swing"?

I don't see this covered very often (okay, never), but I do hear people talk about how far back you should go with certain irons. For example, the idea is that you wouldn't take your PW back as far your driver. I guess my question is, what constitutes a "full swing" for a PW vs. a "full swing" for a driver? Or a "full swing" for every club in the bag, for that matter? Is there any sort of general rule of thumb for how long, or full, of a swing you should take with the different clubs? Of course, I'm talking about just a stock shot, not trying to do anything special.

no rules

I think there aren´t strict rules concerning this.
A matter of fact even so is, that the more you approach the pin, the more accurate your shot has to be.
for example a par 5:
tee-shot tolerance: 20-40m
2nd-shot: also 20-40m (depending on the architecture of the hole)
3rd-shot (for par): 20m diameter
3rd-shot (for birdie): 10m diameter
So if you can achieve the 3rd-shot accuracy with a full or overswinged shot, you should do it like this. I think the main argument is that the less you swing back, the more precise your shot becomes (full - pitch - chip - put).
BUT we all know, that is simple theory, because the whole timing an muscle effort, and with this the squaring-up of the club, changes with an alterated backswing.
