What is proper posture at address?

Could someone describe a routine for getting into the proper posture at address? In Ben Doyle's video he talks about setting his neck parallel to the ground and getting his right forearm on plane with the club shaft. This seems to be a more bent over posture than what is commonly advocated. How do you set-up so that you can get your right forearm and club shaft on plane together and what are the advantages to this position? It seems most of the time players set-up with the hands and clubshaft below the elbow plane. What are the advantages or disadvantages to this position?

Thanks for your help in sorting this all out.

I don't have good answer for you. I can tell you what I did to achieve this and later stopped.

I would address the ball with the club in the trailing hand so I could use the lie angle (actually I toed up to account for sweet spot lie angle and any potential club head droop). Then moved my body in to position. I would actually have the clubshaft pointing at my leading shoulder's arm pit (swing center for the club) taking my grip. I play the ball a bit back cause I set up with the leading edge level to the ground with the shaft leaning forward(clubs are designed that way). Then I would have a lead arm straight with shaft from a face on view and from the side view my trailing forearm would form a straight line with the club shaft. My arms start out hanging straight down from my shoulders.

This had a problem for me, if you start the back stroke you need to make sure the hands trace the plane line back, don't even look at the club head or you will be off plane within the first foot of the back stroke.

Since then I still set up this way but before starting the take away, I drop back to an adjusted address, club pointing to belt buckle and straighten the trailing are by allowing the trailing shoulder to raise up. It is not much but it gets you back to the more traditional set up look.

My thought, there is not one proper position, each golfer has his/her own. There are some factors which will assist you defining yours and it also depends upon how many adjustments you want to make during the swing.

jhn,

Seems like you want an impact fix setup...

Try this procedure, 'the two arm measurement':
Grip the club in your left hand
Lift your left arm and put the club shaft in a vertical position
Then let the left arm come down a little and let the weight of the clubhead set the wrist condition
The shaft should be in-line with the left arm
Then bend from the hip sockets
Now, slightly kick in your right knee, lowering your right side
This allows your right arm to fit on the club properly

There should be about a fist's width between the club and your waist

'You've got to have the MEASUREMENTS in order to hit that ball accurately.' Alignments and measurements.....

The lower body is closer to the left side axis, allowing the golfer to get into a powerful discus thrower type of position on the backswing.

Tailbone high, belt buckle low
Eyeline focused directly on the ball
All joints free, muscles springy and ready

Weight between the balls and heels, equal amount on both feet

Brian: That is great but does not help me much if you do not go into what your set up is . Could YOU describe your set up please? At some point a post with photos would be great as now that jramers has closed the swing discussion section Ino longer have access to the posts on your and mikestloc's swing where I could TRY and figure out the Manzella set up. Thanks.

Do like Ben shows.

My (brian manzella) set up is way better than Baker's

Brian : Are you going to do an article for Auto Success magazine on your Manzella preferred Set up at some point? A lot of people were very impressed with your grip article see the swing section of www.bombsquadgolf.com and GO. Pic 3 was a real eye opener for me . I would be very interested to read about your set up as this may help me locate faults in my address .Thanks.

When Ben said he set up with shaft in line with rear forearm, it struck me, because this is what the Graves teach the setup, (and NG in general) however Ben's arms didnt appear to have the extended lookingness of NG.

I reckon one of the best address in golf is by Nick Faldo back in the early 90's.I love the way his lower body leans toward the target and his upper body leans away.He likes to hold his left hip higher than his right. This sets up a swing arc that bottoms on the target side of the ball.Pity tho he swings like a girl.At 200+ pounds and 5%body fat he should murder the ball.
