Golf clubs can be tools or toys. We've all gone through that phase thinking that new clubs have some secret technology incorporated in them that last years clubs don't have, and the promises of the OEMs will rescue our swing. Eventually we realize that new clubs will not fix old faults, and we settle on a set or two of clubs that we must make work or else we're failures.

I have two sets of clubs; one set for serious play and the other is a set of 'refresh' clubs that I play when my main clubs seem to go stale because I've lost my "feeel" for them..!!!

My serious clubs are a set of perimeter weighted clubs and my refresh set are true forged blades, but they are quite short from heel-to-toe requiring accurate striking or else you pay a dear price. They are unforgiving and make you work! I refresh about once a month and when I return to my forgiving perimeter set they behave nicely and my accuracy returns.

Here's my arsenal of main clubs:

10.5º Driver
12º Two-wood
15º Three-wood
17º Four-wood
21º Five-wood
23º Seven-wood
3 & 5 Hybrids
1 to 9 Irons
W/G/S/L Wedges
Anser-style Putter
Cashin-style Putter
8802-style Putter

My refresh set is from 2 to 9-iron plus three wedges. The perimeter set has 20 clubs and 3 putters; and I pick the 14 clubs I need for play. Of course, I don't ever carry the 1 to 4 irons, I just own them for satisfaction.

All shafts are 1" - 1 1/4" over standard length and my hybrids, irons and wedges are 2º upright.

What golf tools are in your bag?

Not to threadjack but how long do you use the forged before you drift back to the perimeter weighted?
Do you keep going till you start buttoning the forged, or do you feel just a little time will give you the feeel boost to hop back to the perimeters?
R9 irons KBS 3-pw TM 52 & 56
Rocketballs driver x
R11 3 wood x
TM 2 hybrid s
All 2 degrees up and 1" over

O1 .... How long do I use my true forged blade irons to 'refresh' my swing before I return to my perimeter clubs? It depends how badly off kilter I feeel... it could be only one session in my hitting room, or it could be several rounds over several days.

It's like an enema... they clear me out really clean and when I return to my main clubs it's like being reborn...!!! (Occasionally, I must revert back to the muscle-back blades if I've prematurely gone back to my perimeter clubs... for more flushing out!!)

Is it physiological or is it psychological or is it a mix of both...???

Ooooh ... and nice new clubs in your bag... and how long did you have your previous set?

Refresh set? Talk about introducing more variables to a game already overflowing with variables. I don't get it, but if it works, then it's fine.
Driver Titleist 910 D3 8.5 to 10 degrees, RIP 60 stiff, 44.5"
3 Wood Titleist 910 F 13.5 to 15 degrees, UST ProforceV2 86 gram stiff shaft
3 hybrid Titleist 910 H 21 degrees Fujikura something heavy weight stiff shaft
Irons 4 - W Ping S56 White dot AWT Stiff shaft +1" and bent 1 degree strong
Wedges Ping Tour S 50 deg. Yellow dot +1", 56 bent to 55 Yellow dot + 1", 60 Yellow dot + 1"

...............

Surely you've heard the story about golfers struggling with their new putters and then going back to their old putter and their putting stroke and touch are rejuvenated??

I do it with clubs perhaps because my golfswing is not as secure and consistent as yours, having started golf in my 40s and not having the golfswing hard wired into my n-m system like those who started golf in their childhood. An extreme change of club styles forces me to rejig my golfswing on a conscious basis, and when I do that I struggle to normalize it which takes a few hours in the hitting room before I venture out on the course with them. The extra n-m workout seems to refresh my swing, and when I return to the forgiving perimeter weighted clubs it's like a pleasant relief.

That looks like new model Titleist and Ping clubs. How quickly can you adapt to a change of clubheads and graphite shafts?

Irons, two or three rounds and a bunch of ball beating sessions. Not a big deal. Not sure what you mean by adapting to graphite shafts.
The irons shafts are steel.

Interesting list of weapons, particularly mgranato's detailed list of clubs, clothes and contents. The only thing missing is Oakleys and a glock 19... but who knows what's in the pockets of his carry(?) bag.

Btw... with his environmental contributions maybe he should change his name from "mgranato" to "mgreeneto"....

Otherwise, everybody (except me) seem to be sporting the latest driver models with exotic shafts.... hmmmf
