flexibility is what makes it stop; however people will still overturn but if you listen to your body when its "done" you will stop too

In teaching, Why would you lengthen a swing and why would you shorten a swing. If a player is collapsing at the top, would you teach him not to collapse or shorten his swing. Would not the general golfing public be better players with a 3\4ish type backswing.

I don't think you should ever shorten or lengthen someone's swing just for the sake of doing it. If there is a swing issue that affects the length of the swing, fix the problem and "let come what may" regarding the swing length.

When I was sixteen I had a huge overswing that went way past parallel. I spent a lot of time shortening it. Now in my late fortie's I am trying to get it longer again. My recent lesson with Brian, that incorporated a soft draw backswing, no pop-out, left shoulder down, cross the line at the top and right elbow widening at the top has put me back to where I was at sixteen. Now my lack of flexibility has made my swing a lot more dynamic. I look at Tom Watson and question why any instructor would shorten a backswing. It is really tough to shorten a backswing and not lay the club off. If you could swing to your hands directly over your head, with the clubface square, why wouldn't you?
