Where do you look for more speed????

I played with a guy this past weekend whom I give 2 shots. I was amazed because he is built like me 5’10/ 205 and hits the driver 25 yards by me and is a club longer in irons. He hits a 52’ 125 yards! I get him with short irons and on the greens but I couldn’t help but wonder how the hell he creates so much more speed than I do, and I think I hit it pretty well.

Now that Brian has helped me find an ideal pattern I am smoking everything, but after this weekend I find myself looking for more distance. My average drive with roll in 2008 is 268 yards.

Where should I start looking??????

No seriously,
You need to work on increasing your pivot speed. You may block a few when you first try it, but eventually your hands/arms will catch up...
basically the pivot is like walking, one leg and then tha other...you just need to walk faster....
Do the grass cutting dril, but imagine there is a thick clump of grass you need to cut through (but do it in BOTH directions, not just for the downswing)....you'll find that speed things up...:D

strengthen your core muscles. Also invest in a swing speed radar and learn how you create speed, experiment with different feels and find the one that produces the most. Also I say baloney in reference to pivot speed. I used to think that too but from my experimenting, it doesn't add a ton.

I have always heard that to increase distance swing your core or body harder and the arms will follow. Follows the principles laid out in SD 1.0. So actually puttmad & Jim are to me saying the same thing. The core mucsles will cause you to have a stronger pivot at least theoretically.

Scoring better or hitting the ball further? Agree with Jim, core muscles. There is some good stuff on Golf Channel on golf fitness. I got a 8lb medicine ball i throw around/ working on the toss. Helped with about 5 reserve yards if needed. Rarely use. Also you can look at your equipment (better shafts).

While pivot speed is important, I think the most relevant thing to swing speed would be how hard you can really snap your kinetic chain. I know that I have a pivot that tends to out-race my arms and hands. Trying to speed up my arms and hands doesn't really work. My distance comes from when I have a good transition and "hit the brakes" at the right time with my pivot and the chain snaps really hard.

Do you have a preference is swing speed radars?

It's actually called "Swing Speed Radar."

This is the most accurate device, another popular (but less accurate device) is the Belltronics Swingmate. But it will over estimate and make you think you swing faster than you do which isn't a good thing

Fuller shoulder turn should in turn create a longer travel of the golf club allowing for "potentially" more speed due to the longer swing. Also, the fuller the turn often times the more the right arm bends and the more left wrist cocks; again potentially allowing for more speed.

I just watched a young guy on TV..He is 17 and no more than perhaps 10 stone.. His arms are like a womans, no sign of any muscle there at all...skinny to say the least...yet he hits the ball 350......and has a really fast pivot.....:)

Baloney to pivot speed? Then why strengthen the core?

Maybe i need to clarify, but when i talk pivot speed, i am referring to turning the upper body as fast as possible. Be able to speed it up doesn't necessarily mean it will transfer to the club head.

..

Turning the upper body faster? What are you Arnold Palmer? When people say pivot speed they are obviously refering to the hips.

Actually Chris, I meant the whole issue, i.e. a faster process of getting right to the finish position....that involves everything....

Enjoy the skills that you have. Get the most out of your 268 yards by not missing fairways.

No one utilized speed better than Austin!

I was working on precision with the driver, and got tired of bunting the ball, so I went through a couple of patterns:

My straight ball pattern, Tomasello, soft draw, Dante, and an Austin/ S-like pattern.

My MA pattern was absolutely longer, and with a few tweaks I had adequate accuracy. Do I continue to hone my precision pattern or do I just play blast off??? HMMM

The key to speed: Move the club faster:)
