Where Should The Club Be.....?

If I want to hit down on my six iron 4º and hit it straight, where's the best place for the clubhead to be when the shaft is parallel to the ground for the last time before impact with respect to the butt, 2º outside the butt and parallel to my intended delivery line?

And if I want to hit up on my driver 2º, would it be optimal for my the head to be 2º inside the butt and parallel again to the intended delivery path?

Thanks for any help,

James

In general but not always. Really be aware of the likelihood of putting a camera exactly where you could tell for sure.

Thanks, Kevin. It would seem that getting the club in an appropriate alignment when it's parallel to the ground for the last time before impact supposes that there are optimal alignments for the left arm when it's parallel to the ground in the downswing. Have you mapped out left arm alignments and their influence on impact numbers?

I havent. I believe it is collosally more complicated than that. Whether you move laterally or not, what release type, how much down you hit, what your left wrist does thru the ball, etc. I could be way off base, but ive swung left for the past two years and my club has gone from behind the hands with an out left arm (dragged left) to a more vertical left arm and club "on line" (released left)

Obviously the left arm more vertical with a release left works better for you, but would you say that it would work better for most? Just underplaners? Curious as to your thoughts.

I try my best not to show a preference like that but if you can get the left arm closer to vertical it complicates things less IMO. If your David Toms or Stewart Cink, i wouldnt worry about it. But it has to be determined to be the main cause of any issues, like me, to be changed. If the left arm moves out and you can arch and roll the lead wrist easily it wouldnt help you. If the uncocking keeps the face open all the time its a problem.

This would be an excellent thread to do a video on IMHO.

:D

No need to apologize. I know you guys are working on a bunch of great stuff. I am learning a little bit everyday on my own, so that alone has me very grateful for the info on this forum and the time you guys spend with us.

Kevin,

Does this mean that in order to know that the clubhead is 2º outside the hands when the shaft is parallel to the ground in the downswing, you'd have to line the camera up to match up with your intention of shifting the HSP 2º left? If not you couldn't be sure.

Thanks,

James

To get that exact of a measurement, I honestly wouldnt trust it no matter where i had it but I would strive for parallel to the target directly behind the hands. Stand a bit far away and zoom in to avoid parallax.

Hogan 1953,

The clubhead should be very slightly outside your hands from a TARGET LINE VIEW, and ON YOUR HANDS from a HSP view.

The left arm location would vary with all the factors listed above and about 4,567 more.
