Which swing sequence is better and why?

The 2000 swing is better, end of story. Better clubface control, better plane, better plane line, better pivot.
I prefer this to his 1997 swing. I think Brian said he preferred the 1997 swing, maybe he can explain why. But to me, the 2000 swing is The One.

That particular 2007 swing you posted is so ridiculously disgusting is not even funny. Yuk, yuk, YUK! Thank god he does not actually swing like that in a tournament.

If people want a better 2007 sequence, go to gettyimages.com and search for "Tiger Woods swings in sequence".

Interestingly, in Tiger's book, his 1997 and 2000 driver swings don't look that different.

I don't know why you're saying he swings differently in tournaments. I don't think so, especially if you do the Getty search. Maybe the lower camera angle is deceiving?

2007 sequence....

Shoulders are very closed in the millisecond pre-impact shot ( figure 6)... Most have them open ...AND as Brian has always said... shoulders open (in degrees) = axis tilt ( in degrees)... Manzella's LAW...

Back Swing is steeper in the older sequence. Looks like he is really going after it. The 2007 sequence looks more like his pal O'Meara.

I never said I thought 97 was better.

I NEVER EVER said the 1997 swing was better, I said the 2000 swing was better, but it got worse after that.

The 2000 swing is better than the 2007 swing from the DTL view for many reasons. But, I wait to weigh in on them.

I think he does swing different in tournaments....more aggressive. He just seems to have that tendency whether it be the way he is, something that comes out under pressure, something that he can time on the range but not under pressure, or plain n simple something he needs to try to dial back.

Jim has mentioned this quite a bit.....I've seen it too. You see him in these clinics n stuff........even when he trys to really go after one for the crowd......it just looks so much more smooth, balanced, in-sync, in control, etc. (insert other adjectives)

Saw him in one on TGC that really stood out to me (even before I was into all this golf swing stuff)....he said "I'll really step on this one." He bombed it dead straight and noticebly further. Looked really nice.....no weird finish....etc.

Having said that tho.....I'm sure it is a valid issue in itself......but first wobbly point/root cause/what you fix first IS......

?

(what has to be determined)

Ok, I was just a bit confused because you said:

as Tiger got further away from his '97 action and closer to Butch's ideas, he started going backward.
Since 2000 is further away from 1997 than 1997 itself, I thought you meant the 1997 swing is better.

That's kinda what I was thinking. (and also to clubface control)

The older sequence was more of a Rotated shoulder turn versus the 2007 sequence Standard shoulder turn. The rotated shoulder turn should promote a "hip slide" hip action versus a free turn in either direction.

Watch the video of the 2000 British Open for the answer. There is no question his 2000 swing is more effective, his distance control is amazing. Look at his 2007 swing at the US open, his distance control was lacking, sometimes it seemed he had the wrong yardage. Also, 2000 greens at ST Andrews were firmer than Oakmonts on shots into the greens.
