Why have a cut in golf tournament?

Why not re-pair and tee off by score the 2nd day. Looks like no-cut would provide more rounds for younger players and more diverse pairings. Why should you tune in for Friday golf and Tiger Woods round is done. Some great players playing pretty well are not going to make the cut at the British Open.

I defintely don't agree with not having a cut. That's like saying everyone should get a trophy just for participating. It ain't little league. If you don't make the cut, you're obviously not playing well enough.

They do the tee times the way they do the first two days to ATTEMPT to be fair. All players will play early one day then late one day. Again, this ATTEMPTS to be fair with respect to conditions (weather/greens getting spiked up). Not really sure the reason for the halfway cut but I would hate to see how backed up the course might get on the weekend especially at a major under tough conditions (Carnoustie 1999 for example) without a cut.

Why???

Speaking from the perspective of both victim and survivor, sometimes half the field needs to be told to run along and make room for the guys who know what they're doing that week.

Paddy Harrington, Lee Westwood,Luke Donald, KJ Choi, and Angel Cabrera are presently 8 shots out of the lead and looks like will not make the cut. How does that make it a better tournament? No cut is not a reward it is a statement to get out there these next two days and play better. The more tournament rounds the better the players will get.

It's the Open Championship. Those guys are all excellent players, but not its not like they forgot what week it was. They just don't have the game for the course this week. If they can't get it done Thursday and Friday, what makes you think they won't stink it up on Saturday and Sunday. Like mgranato said, those guys need to head out and think about what they've done. They had their chance to contend, and they screwed up. It's not like they should get a free pass because people like them.

Sunmart, think about the economics (Event P&L). You are now a tournament manager. You offer up the no-cut format.
Oops, now we need more volunteers on the weekend. More courtesy cars, more police time, more of everything ($).
In my opinion, this is not a viable idea.

The cut line is a tourney within a tourney. I really like to see guys gut it out to make the cut. Sometimes it is even more interesting than the tourney winner. Those are the guys playing for keeps most weeks.

8 back at the British Open and you do not make the cut, total BS.

Yeah, but more importantly, how many players are between the lead and those that are 8 back? 8 back but with 20 players between you and the lead is WAY different than 8 back with 95 players between you and the lead.

Not having a cut makes as much sense and not limiting the field. Who knows? Maybe one of the qualifiers that didn't make the field could have won the Open...but I guess we'll never know.

They are trying to identify the best player in the world...this week.

This is a pretty un-American statement

Agreed. Plus, I think the R&A has a fair idea of how many players it wants competing on Saturday and Sunday - partly with a view to not sending people off at 6am and not running out of daylight at the other end of the round.

Think of the cut as a mechanism for letting more people compete on Thursday and Friday for a place on the weekend, rather than as a way to exclude players. Exemption policies would be looked at a lot more closely (including exemptions for past winners) if there wasn't a halfway cut.
