Why is my miss a shank?

This is not a post about why someone shanks, I've seen Brian's videos and answers to that question and they're excellent. My question is, why my miss on the range with any pattern is a shank. For example I'll be late into my practice session and all of a sudden I start shanking it. It seems to occur when I mentally get bored or distracted and "leave" where I'm at. Is this typical? Even though it doesnt usually show up the next day on the first tee, it's very frustrating and pretty scary going into the next round. Should I try to stick around and fix it or should I just leave when it starts to happen with the thought that I've just run out of gas for the day.

On a side note, when really trying to practice to get better, say trying to go from tournament scores of 68-78 to more consistently say par or better, how does one practice enough without losing mental acuity as the session goes along and getting sloppy?

you focus and dont get sloppy.............simple as that ..............though I might write more when I get back frommthe range and test my OWN focus

You are getting underplane and/or you over rotate your left arm too much even in your normal pattern. So when you get a bit tired you do it too much and shank

Thanks Jim. I suppose some work in my normal pattern would be in order. I tend to get flat on my poor swings due to an overrotation of the left arm, I'll have to work on it.

hey man---

Of course Jim in the above has once again proved his technical prowess. Awesome is he not? WOW

I would also, as in the above stating about focus. I have learned in the past from myself that the following is a great way to stay sharp and not sloppy at the range.

warm up with 1/2 and 3/4 shots
Only hit 5 balls at a time (add 3 more if needed)
after eack club CLEAN that club and maybe get a sip of water from the jug or cup you have brought with you
Always start with a wegde, then work your way through EVEN # clubs W,8,6,4,2or 3 wood
after the even # smoke a ciggerette or drink a coke, but zone out for about 5-10 minutes
Then start from the SW and go through ODD # SW,9,7,5,3,driver
ALWAYS BE THINKING OF WHAT YOU ARE WORKING ON THAT DAY
this has always kept me from wandering with my mind, and staying in the shot, in the club, in the moment on the range.

I think all too often people only take a w.7.and driver to the range if they even take all 3.
I have always thought and believed if you dont hit all the clubs and all the shots, while still WORKING on what you or working on that day you have missed out on a learning experience and have not work in that peice of the assembly into your swing.
I hope this helps in your "sloppy question in the above" Good luck in all your range sessions!

LOL. Yup I asked jbrunk to be my witness of my left arm only 100 yard PW that I talk about. I fatted it a bit and it still went 80. :-D
