Why is the Toss so hard?

After reading Brian's post on how the "toss" is key to the SD pattern, otherwise it becomes the Soft Push Fade pattern (my pattern :p), it clicked. I really suck at the release/toss and I drag the handle a lot. It feels really strange to "toss" it though, is there anything I can do to get over the feeling that I'm releasing too soon/flipping it?

Thanks!

P.S. Just moved to North Chicago in the fall from CA and winters without golf are really depressing :p.

Jim, how do you pivot correctly? would that be catching the drop? I keep thinking that the hips are the pivot ,so I pivot with the hips. Is it more like a whole body pivot. I need to get this right cause I`ve been messing with it for 3 yrs and cant get the right timing of the "hit it with your pivot" Please try to explain it so I could really understand it....thanks joe

Joe, the pivot is the hips/shoulder/core motion...if you slow it down too much and "stall out" the hands come racing through and they flip. Keep the pivot going and the hands will trail and you won't.

Ah I see. When do you start the toss then, the last time the shaft is vertical? If you can't flip it if you have good pivot, can you release too early then?

Jim thanks, then the secret is timing of the pivot and the kinetic chain. Thats whats soooo hard, any tips on it? I know as soon as the pivot stops the hands com flying thru, right?

IMO it shouldn't be something you should try to make happen. It is more the result of things happening before. The only time I would try to get someone to slow down their pivot is if they were round housing or the excess pivot speed wasn't contributing to be more clubhead speed.

I'm working on the same thing. I got so left side oriented the last 8-9 months that I was dragging the handle a lot, over-doing worry about throw-away, and using a ton of carry, and trying to snap release really late and adding right arm too late and weakly. I was hitting the ball pretty well but losing distance, not gaining distance. Now I am trying to "swing dem orms" more and feel much more like a sweepy toss release that feels like I a swinging less hard. The player I picture when I am doing this out on the course is Annika Sorenstam (for some reason that image works really well). I also think about how well Mickelson swings his arms and creates such good flow. My low point control is much better so everything is much straighter. I hit a couple of spectacular (for me) 3 woods yesterday (260 plus) that were as good as I can hit it. I am hitting the ball further doing this even though I feel like I am throwing away a little. The thing I struggle a bit with when doing this is waiting that split second on the downswing before starting to add right arm and then tossing.

Great point. Timing is everything; it's what separates the men from the boys.

Practice, practice some more, and then practice... Seems like the only way.
