Tiger Woods was surprised that his knee did not hold up on Thursday at The Players Championship. Instead, he withdrew after nine holes and 42 strokes that were painful on multiple levels.

His teacher Sean Foley, though, did not seem surprised his man withdrew. He spoke with PGATOUR.com’s Brian Wacker after Woods withdrew, saying Tiger had felt sore on Wednesday. Foley hinted that this could be a long-term problem for Woods.

“At the end of the day if it’s been bothered before it doesn’t ever really truly heal,” Foley said. “You can be functional and productive on it but this comes from a guy that works hard and trains hard and is a perfectionist. The guy’s created a lot of speed for a lot of time. He’s an athlete and he’s fit but you can’t overuse your body that much and not have … there’s going to be some issues.”

Woods said on Tuesday his left Achilles had been bothering him due to “old age.” Be it that, the impact of four knee surgeries creeping down his leg, or whatever it is, it seems reasonable to expect his left leg to bother him for years.

I've had knee problems since I was 14 and can tell you that without the proper rehab and care, problems can creep into other parts of the same leg. Left knee problems for me lead to plantar fasciitis and hip pain. Got on the right exercise routine and the pain/issues can be managed. I also SERIOUSLY worry about Tiger's legendary workouts including so much running. Awfully hard on a reconstructed knee to run as much as he does IN MY OPINION.

I had 3 left knee surgeries before I was 22 years old--one being ACL reconstruction--before I began golfing. I can say that I can't do some things with the left leg/knee because of the old injuries, one of them being the twist with the left foot planted. I'm far from a Professional golfer but, I try to hit balls at least 3-4 days a week and I have to let the left foot spin some or else my knee hurts and is swollen for a while. The coupled motion of the twisting while being nearly fully extended or at full extension is the damaging motion(s).

He definitely needs to cut out running and get on the bike.

Does anyone else think its strange that Tiger has fired every person in his inner circle that's spoken about him personally or benefited from his celebrity, but he gives Sean Foley free reign to talk about nearly every part of his life.

I don't get it. He's waaaay to private to allow anyone to talk about his achilles heel. Pun intended.
