Over-Acceleration or quick from the top?

Is over-acceleration the same thing as just being to quick from the top? Also, does anyone have any drills for perfecting one's tempo? Thanks.

Good question!

Is over-acceleration the same thing as just being to quick from the top?

No.

"Over-Acceleration" is term that means that the arms hands and club—the "Power Package"—have moved INDEPNDENTLY of the Pivot TO AND THROUGH IMPACT.

Also, does anyone have any drills for perfecting one's tempo? Thanks.
The MANZELLA SEVEN-BALL DRILL!

Place seven balls about 4 inches apart, perpendicular to the target line.

Use a mid-iron. Use your "normal" distance for that club as the base distance for this drill.

For example, my 7-iron distance is 160.

Hit the following seven shots in this order.

1. Hit a 25% distance shot (in my example, 40 yards), using just enough swing for 25% distance (my example, 40 yards). Normal "ummph."

2. Hit a 50% distance shot (in my example, 80 yards), using just enough swing for 50% distance (my example, 80 yards). Normal "ummph."

3. Hit a 75% distance shot (in my example, 120 yards), using just enough swing for 75% distance (my example, 120 yards). Normal "ummph."

4. Hit a Full shot (in my example, 160 yards), using your normal LENGTH full swing. Normal "ummph."

5. Hit a 75% distance shot (in my example, 120 yards), using your normal LENGTH full swing. DON'T EASE UP! Make the whole FULL SWING 75% speed.

6. Hit a 50% distance shot (in my example, 80 yards), using your normal LENGTH full swing. DON'T EASE UP! Make the whole FULL SWING 50% speed.

7. Hit a 25% distance shot (in my example, 40 yards), using your normal LENGTH full swing. DON'T EASE UP! Make the whole FULL SWING 25% speed.
You'll have 7 shots for every club, and you'll have a great FEEL for tempo.

Hi Brian,

Is it possible to move the power package independently of the pivot IF you adhere to essentials and imperatives?

(using the concept of a "stationary post" rather than "stationary head" to avoid that aspect of the TGM debate!!)

Thanks.

personally......

I found that the culprit for over-acceleration alot of the time from the top was an anticipation of throw at the bottom. People try to create speed early to make up for lack of it at the ball. I'm sure there's plenty of other reasons, tho. My transition got alot more "gathered" once I learned not to flip it at the bottom.

.....but given the topic of the first post, I might be referring to being quick from the top. Either way, having something left to dump at impact is a surefire way to smooth out that transition.
