new wedge/wedges

im currently looking for a new wedge to replace my worn out Mizuno MP-R 56, which is my highest lofted wedge, as its C-Grind sole allows me to open the face without the leading edge raising to high off the ground, but still has enough bounce (10* of bounce) to allow me to play bunker shots, out of the rough and take reasonable sized divots. in other words, i love this wedge, and am only looking to change it as it is VERY worn (i've had it for over 18 months)

my first thought was just to buy the same wedge again, same loft, same bounce, same shaft etc. but i know there are some very good wedges out there, such as ping's new tour wedges, callaways latest X tour, cleveland CG12's and vokey spin milled.

im not really interested in lesser known brands like miura and epon, as im not really a good enough player to benefit from all the extra things that you'd get from them.

any recomendations from anyone who knows what they're all like, welcome

I just bought the Callaway x c grind which sounds much like what you are describing with your mizuno...i bought it for the same reasons you mention. It is a great wedge and the MD grooves really spin the ball...it is very versitile.

Hmm it says "Academy Only" but it welcomes recs from anyone so I'm gonna say a little.

Only the 58-60 have the C-grind for the Callaway X-forged - if you're dead set on a 56* with a C-grind without custom grinding you'd have to look elsewhere.

I know that the Mizuno MP-T/R and the Taylormade Z-wedges have a 56* w/ the C-grind. They feel and look different so you might want to go check them out if you can. The Z wedge definitely spins more than the Mizuno, but that might or might not be a good thing for you.

i didnt realise the x tours had a C-grind on the sole. i thought they had a concave sole. i may be wrong however

X-tours and x-forged are two different wedges. Last year's model has the concave sole (PM grind) while the 2008 model has the C-grind.

The MD grooves spin the ball more than any wedge I've tried, but be prepared to pick parts of the ball out of the grooves.

If you love that wedge that much, just get it re-conditioned and the grooves re-cut. You can do it a couple times to a wedge before they are totally "toast."

i did think about that, but there's no-one really around me that does re-conditioning, and i dont know anywhere i can re-groove it

I have been experimenting over the past year or so using at various times Cleveland DSG wedges, a callaway x-forged c-grind with the MD grooves, the Vokey spin-milled just before that, and a Mizuno MP-T. They are all very nice clubs - you will like any of them.

The Callaway X-Tours with the MD grooves seem the most extreme to me in terms of spin, and since I have to buy by own golf balls, unlike the pros, I have gone away from them since I rip the paint off the ball with most any full shot. The vokey-sm is also tough on golf balls. My preference is the Mizuno MP-T series with a very nice c-grind that I like best of any of the wedges (still a lot of spin and very soft feeling) and the Cleveland DSG wedges. But they are all good and whatever fits your eye best is the one I'd buy.
