NSA Grandpa Swing

I slice big time. After NSA, I am incorporating the twistaway trying to keep my clubface perpendicular to my swingpath, but this feels very tight and restrictive. I used to have a big fluid swing, although I didn't like the results, but with NSA I feel like my twistaway-backswing is very limited, the clubshaft only going a little past vertical at the top. Also the followthrough feels much smaller trying to finish with wedding ring up. Is this normal or is it just my own inflexibility? If I stick with the NSA pattern will my swing eventually get bigger and turn into a bigger fluid swing? Right now I feel like I'm swinging like a 75yr old.

Hi bamfur

Many pros have been working on shortening their backswings to create a more compact and repeatable swing. With we amateurs, a long, fluid swing can sometimes be the result of unwanted actions such as excessive breakdown of the left arm (lack of right arm extensor action?) and so on. I look at some of our juniors with such envy - they have these long, fluid, beautiful-looking swings - but sometimes they put one of those lovely-looking swings on it and top it or shank it or hit other kinds of horrible shots. It's the guts of the swing that matters. The fact is that clubface control is huge, so don't give up on it too soon! The fact that it feels awkward means that something different is happening.

agreed...

clubface control gives you a HUGE advantage (ever gotten your butt kicked by a short and straight player?). imo, a lot of bad swings are made because golfers are compensating for a too open/too closed clubface...or they just lack confidence in their ability to control it.

once you learn to have better clubface control, that confidence/practice will stay with you into a new (compatible) pattern - should you choose to modify it.

that's why people like bmanz can hit quality shots with multiple patterns. they have practiced and learned and can trust that the clubface will look where they want it to.

you may find it helpful, when you want to work on clubface control, to just work "on clubface control." by that, i mean practice getting the ball starting where you want it to (chips, half wedges, 3/4 shots, half speed shots, whatever you want). then, it will be a lot easier to understand your true path.

Yes it will FEEL like that to start with. However as you become more comfortable with it you will find yourself making just as big of a turn and hitting the ball farther. Eventually, you can move into something else that FEELS less restrictive but still provides similar results.

Give the compact swing a chance - I know I got used to it, and in my case a full shoulder turn without trying to get the arms way back still gets me the distance I want.

You won't get as much wrist cock with NSA...it still feels somewhat restrictive to me when I do it.

But NSA is superior to any slice swing bamfur.

For everyday golf and for positioning yourself to improve.

If you want to score with it on the course once you've gotten hook-prone with it all you have to do is remove either the W.R. Up or (backswing) Twistaway component and open the face at address.

Then again NHA ("the next step") isn't very hard if done properly...

I don't agree with this; you may not get as much VISUAL wrist cock to begin with in the backswing but you will ultimately INCREASE your wristcock in the downswing to the much closer clubface. You essentially won't be throwing it away so soon.

AGain it FEELS restrictive but it isn't, i can hit the ball just as far with NSA as i can with my normal pattern.
