Looks like Hank has infected Tiger with the driver yips.

How long will it Tiger take to realize that you need to hit all 14 clubs to be as dominant as he wants to be. He's still the best player in the world, but thats ONLY because a) he's mentally tougher and better than everyone and its not even close; b) all of the other players know that he's better than they are.
This stubborness of Tigers reminds me of Mora or Dinardo, getting run, because they were too proud to admit they had made a hiring mistake.

I hope he get his driver swing fixed soon, does anyone else feel nervous watching him hit driver?

I am sure if it necesitates a change in coaches he'll hopefully do it.

Tiger's Driving: a Rant

Will Tiger at least consider going to a more optimized driver setup? He hits it crooked already, so why not try something with higher launch and less spin?

LilDonV, I agree with you. At this point, it's just annoying to watch Tiger make all these swishy, almost contrived practice swings before stepping up and mega-yanking the ball 40 yards left. Why is he so focused on trying to work the ball?

He can hit it as high as he wants with, if he was so inclined, very little movement. How about some high straight balls?

Some people seem to think that he's predisposed to hitting the driver crooked, but there was a time when he was an accurate driver given the lengths he was hitting it. I believe he can get back to that, but first he has to get past his problem with the big stick.

I'm not going to play the "What if Tiger did..." game and speculate about what he'd be doing with a straighter driver, but I will say that he should at least try a different setup for a while just to see what it's like. I doubt he could hit the driver that much worse than he is currently. That sounds harsh, but I think his deficiency with the driver is way below a golfer of his talent.

There's just no reason for him to be hitting the driver so poorly. He's better than that, and sooner or later he's going to do something about his driving (bye-bye Hank, for starters).

Tiger, Tiger...

First of all, Tiger hit the ball beautifully this weekend, and wasn't doing all that marble scooping that we saw at the masters. On Sunday he was hitting his 3 wood amazingly well off the tee - high draws, low cuts, straight shots, stingers...all long and all in the fairway. He was the only guy we saw hit the short par 4 on the back 9 Sunday. He was also striking his irons really well. Did anyone else see the 4 iron he hit into the par 5 on Saturday? It's a shot that no one else in the field has in their bag.

And I agree, that sand shot on 17 was just shocking. It's not just that I can't imagine hitting that shot, I don't even really understand how it's possible. He flew it like 35 yards out of the bunker and stopped it immediately (with water right behind). Wow.

Now, the driver. It's not just the club: his swing with the driver is not good. He's even MORE laid off with the driver, and then he looks like he's trying to hit it 500 yards. When he hits his 4 iron 215 uphill with a cut, or his 3 wood 290 in the air with a draw, he does NOT look like that; he looks in control. Is it conceivable that Phil's distance nonsense is in his head? Because he looks like he's just trying to annihilate the ball every time he takes out the driver.

But it's obvious that he is not at all "optimized" for the driver. He's got a very spinny ball and he hits down on it and it's clear that he's just creating so much speed and so much spin that the ball can go anywhere.

I'm all for Tiger ditching Haney, but on this particular issue, I'd like to see him ditch Nike. Just go to something COMPLETELY different. Maybe a Taylor Made. Maybe a smaller head. Maybe a LOT less loft and hit down on it much less. Hell, I bet Tiger could go back to a tiny old driver head and hit the ball straighter than what he's doing now. He needs to make a big change, but above all he needs to put himself in a position where he's in the same mental spot with the driver that he is with the 3 wood.

Tiger is also the best player in the world because he's probably the best in the world all around from 100 yards in. He's not accurate, but long and length is always a great equalizer because even though he's not as long as Bubba Watson or Gary Woodland, he's still playing courses like they are a par 68. So bomb it deep, get yourself more times inside 100 yards on the approaches, and make some long putts. Not very many golfers, even on Tour, can do that...much less on a consistent basis.

I think it's a thing that Tiger has to be 'sold' on. I'm pretty sure he knows about being laid off, this swing surely shows how laid off he is SwingAcademy.com.

But for all we know, Tiger may prefer the lower trajectory off the tee. I've heard quite a bit that Tiger does not like hitting draws and the laid off move puts him in a position to hit cuts. Lastly, I think he's probably all into the OPS pattern as well which helps get him laid off IMO.

The equipment isn't even close to being the problem.

There's no way he's playing anything that doesn't have a swoosh on it (with the exception of the putter, and I'll bet they've tried). Besides, Nike can make him whatever he wants. Tiger has a whole team of club designers at his beck and call.

You're right about his driver swing though. He hits that three wood so well, and when he manages to hit a good drive, lately it seems to be a draw. It's when he tries to nuke a fade that things seem to get ugly. We'll see what happens, I've got a feeling something big is going to happen before the US Open.

Tiger won't get his driver problem fixed until he fixes the backswing PERIOD. The reason he hits 3 wood ok is because it's a bit shorter and he puts the club in a much better position in the backswing that allows him less compensations in the downswing.

Edit:

He also doesn't need to be optimized or change equipment, he needs a better backswing and he'd be fine.

Yep. The reason Tiger is the best is because of his short game, no contest, he's the man. He needs to hit a draw for a while with the driver.

tiger..is the best player in the whole world...you guys don't think he knows this?

Of course he knows, he's trying to make a comeback. A dramatic one. He's a very very smart person. I'm sure he's just fooling us.....trying to make it look like he's struggling.
Or it's just more competitive for him. Like Jimi Hendrix, he's a righ hander, but he plays the guitar so well he plays it upside down and backwards. Still plays better than most of the people. Don't be fool by Tiger, he's really really smart.

If he is that smart, then he would know how much better he hit it back in early 2000's.

HE'S DOING IT ON PURPOSE.
He plays to win, not goof around. Not to play psychiatrist but when you have a Green Beret father who fought to the bitter end in his battle against cancer the drive to "soldier on" becomes engraved into the personality.

yes.....you know that because you know him in person. No doubt.

Jenhaoyen,

I am sorry but you make some very ignorant posts. You rarely have any idea what your talking about, and you typically sound like a child. Not to mention your avatar is the most ridiculous and annoying thing I have seen. Makes me want to not read this forum. Again I am sorry, just the truth.

I'm sorry to offend you, but you are taking this wayyyyy to seriously.

And of course, Internet is a serious business. Can't never joke about anything.
