Tour Championship Report...

Hey folks just got back from the Tour Championship in ATL. Saw a lot of great golf and some interesting things...

The first thing I noticed about all the guys out there, they are AMAZING putters. I watched Ernie Els hit about 15 40-footers and not one of them was more than 6 inches off in distance and they were all within a couple feet, no short putts or blowing in 3 feet by. You would expect guys like Tiger and Ernie to be sinking putts on the practice green but when I saw Jerry Kelly dropping 10 footers like they were tap-ins I realized what I really needed to work on if I ever want to be at East Lake in September.

All the guys that I watched chipping were using an unusually strong grip, its like they grip the club for a chip and then turn their hands to the right 15 degrees, just thought it was interesting and tried it at the range today and it helped a lot. It was weird to get the feel down at first but i soon realized that it was a million times easier to perform the tour pitch with this grip because you can really feel the hinge of the left wrist and can control exactly when the club clips the ground.

What surprised me most about seeing the tee shots was the ballflight. Tiger and many of the other long hitters hit the ball pretty low. The ball took of low and just kept going out, it never rose and seemed like it never fell. This was the same with 3-woods which made it easier to understand how a 3-wood could go 320 yds (ballflight plus tour fairways rolling a 9 on the stimp).

On the fashion side their are a couple things that you have to pick up before you come on tour. Everyone with the exception of Tiger had Croc (as well as other exotic animals) skin belts of of all different colors. Even guys who aren't seen as fashion icons like Marino and Ernie had crocodile around their waists. I'm sure Tiger is saving up some extra cash for one, maybe now that he won the Fedex Cup he can afford one :D. The next gotta have on tour is a croc skin scorecard holder, obviously I don't know how I have played golf for 13 years without one :D.

All in all the tournament was great and I loved watching and learning from the best in the world.

I was there Thursday. First time I've ever been there. Course is nice and I had heard about Tiger really liking it. I can see why, it's very long and WIDE open. Not a surprise that most of the top finishers hit it deep. Saw Kenny Perry hit a 4-iron from 220 yards, with a slight downhill lie to an elevated green with a slight breeze in the face. The thing about Perry is he looks like he's about 32 years old instead of 48 years old in person. I did feel good about my game watching these guys in the sense from making sweetspot contact and accuracy wise I'm fine, I just don't have the length and short game these guys have. For instance, on #5 a 600 yard par-5, Dustin Johnson hit Driver and a 3-iron into the green. On a 480 yard par-4, he has 125 into the green.

I have never seen Tiger play, but have seen several of the bombers. It leads me to wonder how guys like Brian Gay, Luke Donald, and Jim Furyk can compete with these guys. I understand these are short game masters, but when you are 50 yds further out on any reasonably open hole, the advantage is so overwhelming that one wonders how they can be on the leaderboard after 72 holes.

They need the courses to be tighter. That's why Gay tends to win on courses that are less than 7,000 yards long. It's not because they are short enough for him, it's because they are tight. The Tour generally doesn't want to make a course real long and tight (which I don't blame them), but it would be nice if they had shorter and tighter courses.

Furyk is just a machine. Guy hits it pure time and time again. His putting has been off for him the past year or two, but when he was putting well in his prime, combined with his vastly underrated ballstriking, it was easy to see why he could win.

There are and have been plenty of long hitters who seldom win/won. The game is not going backwards. The equipment improves, teaching improves due to technology the players get bigger and stronger with worldwide competition. The same for every sport.

I don't think the game is going backwards per say. I also think longer hitters should be rewarded when they hit longer shots. But they should have some degree of accuracy to them. That's what makes the game interesting to me. I was pretty disappointed with the setup of the US Open at Bethpage, almost screaming for either Phil or Tiger to win it.

They're the tour's marquis players and it's no secret that the ratings are vastly higher when they're in contention. More Tiger/Phil coverage means more money, and not even the USGA is insulated.

Professional golf is an entertainment business, just like any other professional sport.

Doesn't mean it's right. And given golf's issues with ratings, especially when Tiger is not in contention or not playing, they may want to take a different route.
