What did Brian Manzella mean?

I remember a thread from sometime ago posted by someone who had discovered a key to their swing that resulted in a great improvement. can't remember what it was but I was intrigued by BM's comment. It was something to the effect that discoveries like this never last long.

Undoubtedly true for most of us. Perhaps Brian can explain why?

You have a swing—right now.

Your normal swing is a little loose, across the line, and totally separated from the pivot.

You hear a tip......"keep your arms glued to your chest."

You try it, and flush it.

It will never happen like that again.

Why?

Because your experience changed. Your feel changed, and you probably won't apply the "tip" the same again.

Golf.

that is very enlightening

I agree Ric. A simple answer but with so many implications. Here are some that come immediately to mind:

The difficulty of teaching golf well. So many "professionals" reach for the quick fix. The student does not need to struggle fixing the underlying swing problems, the student sees immediate, albeit short term results, the student is primed for a return visit when it all goes wrong. Easy money. Much more difficult to acquire the knowledge. experience and equipment required to diagnose fundamental swing problems and then set the student on a path that eventually solves those problems while still providing some good immediate results.

The difficulty in learning golf well. Changing, fundamentally, the swing you have now requires commitment, time, and a lot of self-honesty. Are you truly embedding the fundamental concepts or are you simply patching up the old swing with the easy bits and pieces of what BM showed you? Golfing badly while making fundamental changes is no fun and hard on the ego. Can you stay with it without bailing?

Golf magazines, instructional internet sites and your golf partners dispensing advice without any idea of the fundamental problems with your swing. All of it worse than useless. Result: "Tennis anyone?" or, "I need a new set of clubs".

I can tell you that the first day I met BManz I was coming so far from the inside I could have scraped the club head all the way Albuquerque. the last time I saw him I was almost all zero's. it takes a butt load of work but in the end the overhaul has changed my golfing life forever.

Good for you Tricky...he is a great teacher.

My Dad always used to say you improve in 'plateaus' as a result of a bunch of things, rather than one or two; fairly sage observation - couldn't chip worth beans tho. ^_^
