Tiger Woods says he did no further damage to knee, Achilles at The Players Championship - ESPN

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. -- Tiger Woods says he didn't do any more damage to his left leg at The Players Championship and expects to play the U.S. Open next month.

Woods made it only nine holes last week at The Players -- his shortest tournament ever -- when he withdrew because of what he described as a chain reaction of pain from his left knee to left Achilles and tightening in his calf. He shot 42 on the front nine.

On his website Monday, Woods said he irritated the knee and Achilles without making them worse. He said doctors have advised rest, cold water therapy and soft tissue treatment, which he said he already had been receiving.

"Aggravating my injury is very disappointing," Woods said. "I'll do whatever is necessary to play in the U.S. Open, and I'm hopeful I can be there to compete."

The U.S. Open is June 16-19 at Congressional, a course on which Woods won in 2009 at the AT&T National.

He did not say how long it would take to recover.

His website said he was doubtful to play at the Memorial Tournament, which begins June 2, while he tries to strengthen his leg. It said playing before the U.S. Open would be a "week-to-week" decision, although Woods has never played the week before the U.S. Open and has never played the St. Jude Classic in Memphis, Tenn.

Woods reported a mild sprain of the medial collateral ligament and a mild strain of his Achilles from hitting a shot off the pine straw under the Eisenhower Tree on the 17th hole of the Masters in the third round. He played the final round and shot 67.

He said he did not practice until Monday of The Players, and did not play any golf until his practice rounds. Woods looked fine during the 9-hole practice rounds he played last week, and swing coach Sean Foley said he was pleasantly surprised to see Woods look as though he had not lost much from when he had last played in the Masters.

Woods said he hurt himself on the opening tee shot at Sawgrass.

"The knee acted up, and then the Achilles followed after that, and then the calf started cramping up," Woods said after he withdrew. "Everything started getting tight, so it's just a whole chain reaction."

If he plays at Congressional, he likely will have played nine holes of competition between the Masters and the U.S. Open.

Minutes before the statement was posted on his website, Woods said on Twitter, "Bummed that my left leg has me on the sidelines, but I want, and expect, to be at the US Open. Will do all I can to get there."

It would not be the first time Woods has played the U.S. Open with so little competition.

When he won his last major at the 2008 U.S. Open, he had not played a tournament in two months because of arthroscopic surgery on his left knee immediately after the Masters. Doctors later discovered stress fractures in his left leg. Woods wound up winning at Torrey Pines in a 19-hole hole playoff.

Patterns

Wow, I see a really bad pattern here - I'm OK, no I'm not. It's not that bad, I need to withdraw. My doctors told me not to play but I'm playing anyway. This guy is his own worst enemy in more ways than one. On top of that - it appears to me that when you are that wealthy it's easy to get a lot of YES people around you and if you aren't careful you can make a lot of bad decisions - that's easy to see in someone like Charlie Sheen - I'm just guessing that it's maybe having an effect on Tiger in subtle different ways (or maybe not so subtle ways).

"I'll do whatever is necessary to play in the U.S. Open ..." Here we go again!

How about - I'll do whatever is necessary to have my knee and leg healthy again and won't play until it is

When's the smorgasboard open up at Ruth Chris's Steak House? - This guy is paving the way for my unlimited meal.

Yeah, there were a few side bets on Tiger's season and career on this site. It seems like he'll risk injury to play in the majors, and other biggies like The Players. I don't think we'll ever get the straight dope (pun not really intended) on his health.

It's hard not to get the feeling like he's rushing it, or feeling like he's running out of time, doesn't want to miss the opportunity at a major. Looking at it from a glass half full perspective - there are guys contending in majors in their 50's now - that have less talent than him and don't have the physical conditioning that he does. I think (assuming good health) that he has potentially a 15 to 20 year window left to "theoretically" win majors. That's a long time to win 5 majors. I'd say at least 10 years - win one major in every eight played- and you'd beat Jack's record. He should (and maybe he is - as I can't say I know what he is thinking) make decisions based on a 10 year game plan and not just what he's going to do the next couple of months.

Hi,,,
I think that It is the time for the Tiger Woods to stop attending the Press conference and start working on his tennis. He is thrown out of the top ranks with no win in last 6-7 Major tournaments.
If he want to make a Come back Its now or never...

Buy out for 98 pushups?

About those 100 pushups in 10 minutes...what's the buy out?
I've been doing squats and pullups, but no friggin' pushups...no prob. Brian will verify as he's staying with me this weekend here in OC.

I think that if he follows doctors orders and does a proper recovery he could come back and go on a late career run like Jack did with 3 majors in is 40's. Tiger could take the whole year off and still have 4 years in his 30's and rushing isn't helping him so far.

Anybody have the linK to the original thread with that bet? :) I'll be reasonable on my buyout offer, don't worry...
