Working on my swing and the new release

I acknowledge in advance the distinct possibility that my problems are are not related to my efforts to implement the new release.

I have worked very hard the last few weeks doing my best to implement the new release. I have not had any success...yet. I am catching the ball thin, and even when I do get it out of the middle I would estimate that I have lost about 10% distance...ball height remains high and it feels like I am flipping more. With my irons, the ball goes straight but it rarely come soutof the sweet spot. I am scoring in the high 70s most rounds, but am somewhere between embarrassed and frustrated that I can score reasonably well and hit so few shots the way I want to . I am surviving by hitting at least one, if not 2 extra clubs to compensate for the loss in distance.

Is there a 'trap for young players' when implementing the new release that would result in these outcomes? What can go wrong? What's the most likely source of my mis-implementation?

I have had to work through some inside out issues with the new release and reckon it is from doing the left shoulder motion wrongly (also had my best rounds ever.....).

I think one problem can be that you start to try to make the left shoulder go 'up'. This delivers everything into the hitting area in a big mess - I think because the left shoulder effectively just 'stops'). So shanks, tops, big hooks, pushes with driver and all the severe inside out stuff you can imagine result!

I don't think making the shoulder go 'up' is in the video - but it is something I have fallen into doing from time to time when working with new release.

So I think (but welcome expert comment) that if you are trying the 'new release' stuff but don't manage to get the left side moving properly, you are in trouble.

I'm with you on the left shoulder movement. You still have to throw the drunk off and back. If I don't I hit it fat or the club head slips right under the ball.

I would get a good camera and make sure that your hands (or couple point) are bottoming out at the right thigh. It took me a while to get this right, and it feels very different than you might imagine, especially if you're hands arent raising at all before impact. Once you get the feel of this, everything else is gravy IMO. I've been working on this lately and I've hit some of the longest irons and drives I've hit all year even though I'm all bundled up and there's snow on the ground.

interesting comment on the left shoulder action. Maybe that's my problem with the new release. Trying to release has to me pull hooking left of pelosi.

You asked for it…see videos below. Each video contains at least two swings, some as many as five. You probably need only look at one of the videos.

The two aspects of the ‘release’ swing I am concentrating on are 1) back to target and 2) out toss. Do I need more shoulder rotation? Is there any evidence that I have the makings of a correct out toss?

I am not making any conscience effort to pull the hula-hoop out of the ground. I have not yet got the first two automated, so I get a bit confused trying to do all three at once. Nor am I making any effort to pivot. My thinking – which I think is BM inspired – is that if I get the everything else right, then the pivot looks after itself .

Things I that concern me in the videos:
1. Stance is a little closed.
2. Grip looks pretty ordinary. Not sure how to describe it.
3. Take way is too ‘inside’. This remains a work in progress after more than 12 months working on it.
4. Follow through is off plane…I suspect this related to the this feeling: my right arm can feel like I am delivering an uppercut with palm facing to the sky…I struggle to get right wrist/hand on top of left hand/wrist during follow through.
5. At address, my club is not centred (i.e. pointed toward belt buckle).
6. My left knee and right hip seem ‘soft’, and unstable. Related info: a few weeks ago I had a great session with my coach and all I worked on was maximising rotation of the shoulders without rotating the hips. I striped them that day. Is there a power leak here?

Things that please me in the videos:
1. Left wrist seems pretty straight at top of backswing.
2. Clubface is open on backswing… and toe of club is pointing down at top of backswing.
Do you agree with these assessments and that they are positives?

Thanks.

Geoff,

IMO, the majority of your issues stem from your set-up and your first move away from the ball. By never really getting on to your right side (see Soft Draw takeaway) your hip turn (reverse hips) just makes you corkscrew into the ground. As you begin your DS, you are so far forward that any out toss will only allow you to barely reach the ball but never get your hula hoop into the ground at all. If you felt a jump, you'd probably top it.

The first thing I noticed is the right thumb on top of the grip versus on the the target side of the grip. This creates tension in the swing.

I agree that the backswing is so limiting that any out toss would act act as almost throwaway so you can hit it at all. The reverse hips would be the main concern if it were my swing.

Set up is not good. It would be if you were left handed. That alone starts everything going wrong. Arms too far from body and stiff make you take the clubhead inside with the arms separating from the body and over rotated to a flat position, where else could they go from there?. Also you need more of a reverse k setup. I wouldn't even worry about any out-toss or new release till I fixed those issues. JMO.

Would be interested to know Brian's opinion on how he gets into the corkscrew/reverse arse position. Whether it comes from the set up or not.

What else could he do from that left leaning, right side too high setup if he's trying to turn?
