Guys,

I need some help with a problem that I have been fighting for a year now and would really appreciate any help that you might be able to provide. At the top of my backswing my club is parallel to the target line, but as I start down the club does this little twirl move out of the top that causes it to first get below plane then it sometimes kicks out over the plane towards impact. I would love to find a drill or thought to help me keep the club from doing this laying off move. Thanks for all of your help. Also Brian, have you ever worked with someone who has had this problem.

The Larry Nelson special. All I got on that one is to just try to convince yourself that the twirl is unnecessary and the relatively motionless feeling you will have in your hands at the top is a good thing. Also I think that emphasising grip pressure in your left pinky instead of the fingers of the right hand will make you move towards laid off.

If I was counseling about this problem I would inspect the grip - which may be such that unwanted pressure is impinging the shaft from coming to rest at the top prioir to the downswing. It isn't in need of a drill, as I see it, but of a grip inspection and probable change there. I see it frequently and cure it that way.

It's just a sign of "ready to hack" (without enough "lag", BTW), which leads to early "throwaway". It doesn't happen without a ball, does it?

Tell yourself "Load it and sustain it".

My problem exactly. I bet you have a worn out spot on your grips where your right thumb sits. A great tip I picked up on this site is swinging while your right thumb is off the grip. In the downswing feel pressure on pp#3 all the way through, ie sustain the lag. Don't apply pressure, feel it being applied. I have tried for twenty years to break this problem, it comes back under pressure. Also, try Brian's fiddle drill with the above thought of swinging with your right thumb off the grip.
