I have read you are really advocating this, the left shouder as far from the ball as possible, can you elaborate some more or did I miss a thread, TIM

When brian mentions "the left shoulder as far from the ball as possible" he means IN HEIGHT.

Not necessarily trying to get your upper body, and consequently your left shoulder, as OPEN as possible; he means as far away from the ball in an "up" sense.

So if the right shoulder is going down/out that means the left is going up/in so really get and get the UP as far UP as you can.

Thanks JIM that makes more sence, do you have any video of your swing, I do the lag takeaway most of the time, sometimes I play with the early set , I would like to see your takeawy, if you want send it to me via email, thanks TIM

Actually...

I mean open too.

Really, I do.

The Left Shoulder is going in the OPPOSITE DIRECTION as the clubhead.

So....as the clubhead goes DOWN AND OUT..the left shoulder (Actually WHOLE LEFT CHEST) goes UP AND IN.

The clubhead goes forward, the left shoulder "AREA" goes BACK.

Get it?

Brian, I have had some real success with this recently hitting the ball real solid with an early in the season 78 and 80 last weekend, but at least twice during each round a come uo with a big snap hook. Am I just missing the down and out or is the left shoulder getting to open. I'm thinking I'm letting the clubhead follow the shoulder maybe, but when I try to correct by pulling my left arm on a path more down and out = block. Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

I hit balls with this thought last night and really hit it great - nice controlled fade.
2 things caught my attention:
1. Grew up playing hockey and have always tinkered with trying to translate the slapshot motion into the golfswing. Never was succesful until last night. Holding my club as a hockey stick and taking "slapshots" I noticed how far open and back the left shoulder gets in that motion and allows you to really drive the right shoulder down and thru. It also allows you to put tremendous lag/bend on the "stick" increasing power. I hit balls trying to mimic the left shoulder move of the slapshot and it worked great.
2. I have always had a hard time using my pivot as the downswing move. ALways felt I lost feel, caused me to come over the top, etc. Always kind of an arm swinger. drop them from the top, but this hurt my power and timing. Going to the slapshot left shoulder open and back really allowed me to use my pivot to power my DS for the first time. Really feel like I found something.
WEather is supposed to stink here in MA for the forseeable future so I think I am getting my hockey stick and shooting inside to ingrain the motion!
I know GD once did a comparison of Brett Hull, comparing his golfswing to his slapshot. You can reall see the similarities in that photo sequence.

:)

This is pretty simple:

If your left arm has to be across your chest at impact, the chest can't be in the same position as it was at address.

So.....if the chest HAS TO BE more open, more tilted or—in most cases—both!

the left arm does not have to be across the chest, but in the swing you speak of, it across the chest, then yes I agree they muct be open. But in that swing you manipulate the pendulum and do not take advantage of it and loose effeciency

Nope.

Neil,

Brian Manzella, The ITALLIAN STALLION, does NOT teach a method.

I have PLENTY of students with strong grips (at least half), LOTS of students who do not do "wedding ring up" (more than half), people with backswing shoulder turns that are on the STEEPER side (10-20%), etc. etc.

It is my fault—and my fault alone, that lots of folks really don't GET what it is I do in private lessons. That is something I WILL ADDRESS on this site very soon.

The "Mike Austin" method is a good one, and elements of it are visable in many of my lessons althought I came up with them—WITHOUT HAVING EVER SEEN his stuff. Great minds think alike, or something like that.

But, beleive it or not, people visit this site to hear what I HAVE TO SAY.

Myself and my site are the ONLY PLACE on earth you can get the information and MESSAGE I am providing.

If golfers want to learn more about any other method, I am sure they will go find it. But, for now, please......

Neil,

WITHOUT HAVING EVER SEEN his stuff. Great minds think alike, or something like that.
Not all of what I have been learning about the body, and therefore the golf swing, has to do with mike austin. I started taking yoga, learning about body movements, and expanded from there. The law of the pendulum was around before any of us, MA included. And if you have not seen his stuff, dont assume you know it. You take a lot of pride in saying you will learn what EVERYONE says and then do it better, will you really? I can tell you one thing for sure, if you knew some of the things I have learned about the human body you would not drink all that diet coke, that stuff will kill you man;)
take care

Agreed on that one s4p...that artificial sweetner, aspartame, Nutra Sweet stuff is incredibly bad for you (saw a report on the original lab tests done on the stuff, they were all falsified to get past the FDA)...
Better to drink ordinary Coke and dilute it with water if you have to....
