Working on my swing and the new release

I acknowledge in advance the distinct possibility that my problems are are not related to my efforts to implement the new release. I have worked very hard the last few weeks doing my best to implement the new release. I have not had any success...yet. I am catching the ball thin, and even...

Out toss - free throw analogy

Can we have a chat about the free throw analogy in the ideas video...between 19.00 and 19.30 to be specific. BM demonstrates the free throw and his hand is facing the camera...Note how his thumb goes from 'at the target' to 'perpendicular to the target' quite (at which time his palm is towards...

    2-D video analysis

In recent weeks the forum has discussed the limitations of video analysis, usually in comparison to the benefits of 3D. Given that most of us will never access a 3D machine, I think we have to find a way of using 2D successfully. Am I correct in saying this: 2D remains useful for...

How can you hit 5.5* down and not take a (significant) divot?

On another thread Brian wrote: The divot was a result, but we got some next-to--zero divot 5.5° downs on the last few balls of of the ground. The divot can tell you something, but is NOT an angle of attack indicator. How can you hit 5.5* down and not take a (significant) divot?

No tug rule vs back to target (for as long you can)

Are these the same thing or different concepts altogether?

    Catching it thin

I hitting a lot balls thin in recent weeks. No sign of divot. My theory is that I am having 'low point' difficulties with my irons...In other words, my low point is before ball and I am hitting the ball 'on the up'. It's like the whole hula-hoop needs to move two inches towards the target...

Can you have not enough spin with the driver?

I trialled a driver at a demo day today...flightscope figures from RPM had me going in at 1850-1950 rpm...felt great...ball went a mile. Previous trackman sessions had me at 2500-2600 with other drivers. For the sake of the argument, lets assume that the numbers are valid across both measurement...

Knowing when your back is at the target...

Inspired by the Ideas on the Release video, I am keen to improve my ability to get my back to face the target at top of downswing. I assume this the same as turning your shoulders 90*. What is the best way of knowing that you are turning enough? I can only think of i) getting into address...

On the backswing, what is 'the feel' with respect hip turn and shoulder turn?

A lesson during the week identified that I had a very large hip rotation which lead to underplane takeaway/backswing...we had some fantastic results when trying to limit the hip rotation and maximise the shoulder rotation...and when i say fantastic I mean the best 15mins of ball striking I have...

Wedding ring up and the 'new' release position

When I look all the videos that exemplify the new release position, I notice how the right wrist rolls over the top of the left....how is this different from the concept of 'wedding ring up'?

No force against the shaft (FATS)

A key feature of the mega thread is the argument that there should be no force against the shaft. Put alternatively: at bottom of downswing and at impact all the force should going away from the ball toward the golfer. Is it this force that provides the 'up' for the 'coupling point up and in...

    Left leg: should it straighten?

On the downswing/ follow through, should the left leg straighten or retain the same amount of flexion as at address? If it straightens, when should it straighten? If it straightens, should it 'lock'?

Trying to not flip by concentrating on wrist positions is sheer lunacy

This is a quote I have pulled out of the forum archives. It was made by a member in the context of discussion inspired by Confessions of Former Flipper and how the pivot is key to eliminating the incentive to flip. I recall in the mega thread comments by Brian that 'pivoting like crazy is...

Driver, hitting up with de-lofted club

This is a direct quote from Brian (Page 61 of the the mega thread): 1. You are trying to scrape the ball off of the turf with a de-lofted club. With a Driver, you are trying to hit up with a de-lofted club. Regarding the deloftedness of the club....presumably is the natural/inevitable...

Left wrist: What is the definitive Manzellean statement?

I have got myself totally confused. What is the definitive Manzellean statement on the position and movement of the left wrist at 1) impact and 2) follow thru (i.e. just after impact)? After impact, does the left wrist merely rotate (i.e. keeping flat left wrist)...or does the left wrist...

    Release thread: brief summary

Given the volume of quality information within the Jacobs-Manzella release thread I thought I would try and summarise my key learnings and share them with the forum. Most other 'great threads' are smaller and the information easily retrievable. Not so with with this mega thread. What you see...

Australian Institute of Sport - Golf program

There is a discussion another thread about high performance golf programs...some people referred to the Australian Institute of Sport model. I though the topic sufficiently interesting to create a unique thread: Home : Australian Institute of Sport : Australian Sports Commission

In the blue corner: Callaway X16 Proseries, X-stiff shaft. In the red corner: Spalding Tour Edition, S300 shafts. TE half inch shorter than X16s. The TE claim to fame is that Norman used them to win the 1986 won British Open. For those that can't remember them...
