Well, noone sane will argue that the course length matters and I am not aware from which tees Els and Singh played. What I know is that amateurs specializing in playing with hickory equipment kicked their butts easily.
I'd like to see the experiment that I described in my post to Kevin. We should see then what's the reality is.

Cheers

They didn't kick their butts. It was a handicap event, they were getting strokes.

Therefore, if pros specialised with hickory equipment they will kick their butts easily.

No doubt about it. I am not arguing that amateurs are better than pros or even equal to them, I am challenging silly notions that pros are so good they can play even with an umbrella.

Cheers

Odd discussion really. The playing characteristics of hickory is so vastly different than today's clubs it is not even the same game.
I cannot think of a sport right off the top of my head in which the athletes are not bigger, stronger and faster than previous generations.
Notice I did not say necessarily more skilled but I sure think the depth of talent is way deeper in nearly every sport than it was 50 years ago.

The amateurs used modern clubs and balls. The pros had to use the hickory and old balatas.

I stand corrected. Indeed, it is written that amateurs played modern equipment. It means that what I wrote before was just stupid. I am sorry.

Good night.
