A before and after at the Open

I can't help but see a bizarre sort of before and after of Tiger's swing when they cut back and forth between him and Scott. Watching Scott pull driver and swing free and aggressive compared to Tiger trying his best to avoid pulling driver is quite a contrast of what was and what is. No one's swing was more like 2000 Tiger than Scott, and add Williams carrying his bag now.... it makes for quite a bizarre jog down memory lane at this major.

Agreed M...His swing resembled TW to a tee. Apparently not his heart. I'm never one to criticize great players but...some want the ball in the end of the game and some just don't. As great and fluid as that swing is I'm betting he'd trade it for Claret jug in a NY minute. Sad really. Some never recover from something like this. I hope he does. Just shocked he hit 3 wood on 18 and even more shocked Stevie let him!

In the words of the immortal Henry Longhurst, "Oh my my, Shakespeare wrote tragedies about less than this."

Where WAS Stevie during those last four holes? I know we don't see everything on TV, but I was really surprised how little Stevie said in the fairway on 17 and 18 - almost like he was just giving Adam distance and not communicating. He didn't appear to say anything before or after any of those shots. Weird.

Funny though, I don't remember 2000 Tiger choking his ass off. Wayne Grady kept going on about how Scotty wanted to emulate his boyhood hero Norman. Well guess what, he just did by blowing a 6 shot lead!

And good call on Stevie. What are you paying him for if he's just going to stand there and let you blow the biggest chance of your career?

I saw a "fake Steve Williams" twitter account that said exactly that right after Adam missed his par putt on 18.

He had that coming; there was so much revenge in his heart when he made the comment, that we all have to pay for what we say at some point! BTW, I didnt see the comment so I'll still take a first on that!

One very important distinction to remember from my opening comments... I said the two had very similar swings in 2000, I didn't say the two were very similar golfers. I've also said numerous times that I don't think Tiger's 2000 swing was why he was so great then.

Sorry Mike, my first comment was lacking a smiley or two :)

Seriously though, I think you're right. Tiger's dominance wasn't down to his swing (though it helped). It was his testicular fortitude (probably due to all the porn stars he was nailing!)

And not missing a putt for 2 years didn't hurt either. :)

Brings up a larger question of greatness, period. It soooo much more thya a swing. TW had it in spades, does not have it now for whatever reason. Start with putting if you like. He used to will the ball in the hole, the will is on LOA...or gone for good? Self belief makes great athletes, lack of it makes them average athletes.

In addition to his putting he just doesn't seem to be the same from 150 in. Where is his distance control with the wedges and around the greens in general he just isn't as consistently great. He still hits some great shots (holeout from the bunker Friday, the pitch in on 16 at Memorial) but he hits some stinkers too.

Say it aint so! I'll pay anyone $10,000 if they can show a single putt that anyone ever willed into the hole. :) (Except for Hogan, of course, because many witnesses actually claim to have physically seen his will.)

I would say Tiger's will/want/desire/need to make a "big" putt now is greater than it has been at any point in his career.

I'll bet you there is a Finnish instructor with "green" proof of someone willing a put into the hole. Just search the internet and he'll tell you it can happen! ;) I couldn't resist.

Tiger Woods is still one of the best golfers ever in this game no matter what his swing or faults. He's almost always competing in major tournaments when most tour players can't crack the top 10 at ONE for their career.

Ah my friend, you have forgotten our old friend Shivas Irons, who reminded us: “Aye one field afore ye e'er swung. Our boy TW has lost his connection to the "field". FEAR, (False Expectations Appearing Real) has reared it's ugly head and set up camp in his golfing soul (AKA the putting stroke) He is headed into the abyss, the eternal resting place for the greats of yesteryear... Foley, Haney, Harmon- all pawns, mere bit players on the stage where fear and doubt are featured. As that great American Philospher, Sam Snead, once so eloquently quipped: "The yips: once you've had em, you got em"!

Take the same putting stroke and wedge swing he has right now, not one change, execute them with more self belief (will) and my money is on better results. Ever play a great practice round and suck in the tournament?

I guess this shows that caddies though important don't swing the club or make the putts for the players. That is on the player and the Tiger of 2000 is a different animal than Adam Scott or the Tiger of 2012.

BTW: Stevie still trails Tiger by one in majors and Nicklaus by 5.
