A Desperate Man

2 years ago I was a reasonable golfer. Handicap was UK 11 and on the verge of hitting single figures. Only putting was holding me back. 2 years on and my game has just totally disintegrated. I couldnt play to 11 in a month of sundays and am putting well now!

I am now at the point where my enjoyment of the game has totally gone and if it carries on for much longer I can see me giving the game up. I dont want to do this but its making me miserable.

The problems I am having are getting in front of the ball, high rights and shanks. I am 6ft 4 and know I am steep into the ball but no matter what I try I cant seem to cure it. Also, my swingspeed has dropped from 110mph to 95mph.

I have had lessons with local pro's and purchased some of Brian's videos (NSA & SD) yet these have made no difference and now dont know where to go next. I would really appreciate some advise on this and hopefully someone may be able to bring some of the enjoyment back!

Thanks

Nick

Without seeing your swing Eric, it sounds like you have a couple things you have to train yourself to learn. Obviously, you have to get better control over the sweetspot of the club. Really go back to basics and examine closely your hold on the club. Really make sure it's sound. Then, study, study, study, and then study some more Brian's explanations in NSA and YouTube regarding the feel of lagging the sweetspot. You must master this technique if you are going to get out of this rut. The takeaway in SD might help you with this as well. Once you can do this at will, I would bet that you arent swinging left enough (for a righty). A combination of being underneath the swetspot and blocking your swing to right field (American Baseball :D) is a sure way to have the problems you are experiencing.

Hi Kevin

Below are a couple of swing videos. Sure they will give you a better idea of the issues. I believe I am swinging too far left at the moment and thats why I always cut the ball. Cant remember last time I hit a draw!

I'll tell you why the SD video hasn't helped you....because you're not doing it :D Seriously, if you want to get better fast, you need the full monty. Lagging clubhead takeaway, inside hands with clubhead outside, some inner rotation to start your swing. Your clubhead moves so much before anything else it would take Houdini to hit it consistently. You have some nice things going on there but you're putting yourself behind the eight ball with your takeaway.

BTW, you are not swinging too far left. It may feel that way, though.

The problem when people try to learn sports is they are too oriented on one part of learning. When people say that they are 100 shooters and that they cannot improve, it shows a great lack of unwillingness to change their approach.

You can always improve your fitness, strength and endurance.

You can always start a stretching routine.

You can always improve your mental focus and reprogram your self-talk.

You can always hit putts in your living room and work on hitting the sweetspot or if you have enough room, your speed control.

You can always get a practice ball and hit them in your house or garden even if you can't get to the driving range.

You can always sit down and imagine how to plot your way around your regular course better.

You can always listen to intelligent discussion and try and increase your knowledge.

Played yesterday and just concentrated on the inner rotation. Struggled at first but improved as round progressed. Played to 14 and was 3 over on the back 9. I was really pleased and can see some light at the end of the tunnel. Many thanks for your help

keep it up, but that was the cliff motes version. Keep us posted but review the SD backswing often on your DVD
