Aiming Point...How to get there

No matter how hard I try I just can't seem to get there with a bent right wrist. i.e. still driving down and out. Chipping is fine, but the full swing isn't there. Always seem to release early.

Have good axis tilt with forearm on plane an good extensor action. The result is a nice 'slight' draw, BUT the trajectory is high. The result, I believe, of an early release.

What should I work on to get to the aiming point with my right wrist still bent? Drills? What am I missing?

Thanks

Are you getting your weight to the left side? You might be getting the axis tilt by leaning away from the target instead of getting your hips towards the target. I like to feel my left hip and left knee over my left foot by impact. It's really hard to retain the lag if you remain on your back foot.

You could also do the Unhurdlable Hurdle drill from Brian's Former Flipper video. Put your golf bag at right angle to the target line and place it about 2 feet behind your ball. This is the "hurdle". Now use a short iron (say 8 iron) and hit some half shots and three quarter shots. You have to be a bit careful that you approach the ball from the inside, but otherwise the drill almost guarantees that you get your weight across and retain the lag. Once you get used to the feel, you can extend it to full swings and longer clubs.

Liftoff,

It could be that you haven't ovecome the psychological urge to bend your left wrist and flatten the right wrist during the release. You have probably played for years doing it that way. That is a hard habit to break. Your old habit is easiest to break on chips, because the need for power isn't there. But on full shots, the "need for power" kicks in and, because the downswing only takes a fraction of a second, you fall back on what's in your storage bank.

The only way I could make the transition was to stay with the basic motion curriculum until I convinced myself that "flipping the wrists" is unnecessary and detrimental. I also used a lot of dowel drills, because there is no clubhead to flip.

Not saying that everyone has to go through the "chip-pitch-punch-full swing" ladder, but you may have to if your problem is more perceptual than mechanical.

I believe I'm getting 'left' but will confirm. I end up 'wedding ring up' and on the entire left side, but not sure if it's 'later' in the swing. MJoe and Jono are both saying the same thing so will focus on that today at the range.

RWH, you too are probably correct. At 63 it's difficult to change after 40+ years at the game. But if Lynn can do it...... Have made tremendous strides with TGM. Actually bought the book when it first came out, but without this forum, its information was difficult to use. Five iron use to go 150, not it's around 185+, so I'm happy with the progress.

Thanks for the direction. Will give feedback after a few weeks.

rwh: I have all of Brian's video/CD's. I find the site and video's extremely helpful. Especially 'Flipper'. Will be getting Building Blocks as well. Thanks for the help.
