Anti tug move

Hi guys, what's the best way to help with the left arm tug?

Sorry if this is "old news", just getting back to the forum and it's something Brian mentioned in a lesson a couple of years ago. thx

What helps me is from the top of the back swing, keep the back to the target as long as you can while moving the hands down in close to the body.

My downswing feels like it is started by the hands. Can't tell that on video though--it looks like the lower body is initiating, but I especially cannot start the downswing with any upper body turn.

The way I think about it Curtis is if you start down with your hips you are taking the "slack" out of the chain too early and you tug on the left arm and cause an early release. But if you start down with your arms and hands you are adding a little "slack" in the chain early and you can then take it out at impact. Keep in mind this is all "intent", if you watch it on video you would think you started with the hips because your body is simply reacting to what the club is doing, I firmly believe in not intentionally trying to fire the hips but to let it happen as a reaction to the club...You have lots of reading to do, Brian and the team have come out with lots of great info this past year. Matt.

Awesome post Matt.
I like the split grip practice swings while applying outward force and swinging left. And right arm only swings.

How do you go at the ball hard and not tug on it and do the tumble/new release into the ball?

Tugging for me seems powerful. All this "new stuff" doesn't for some reason. Hope that makes sense.

Don't think in terms of powerful think in terms of speed. The upper body and shoulders feels powerful but the arms and hands are speed and speed is what you want.

I'm also lost with the tug as well. The way I tried it was to try and keep the lead tricep quiet in the transition. I couldn't get it working correctly at all, would love a little clarification on the tug please.

Tugging used to feel powerful to me, but after I was able to stop doing it I hit it just as far with less effort. You just have to learn to trust it, because it does "feel" weaker.

For me tugging is a one sided thing, once I could end the left sided pull earlier I was able to understand when I needed to use the right arm/shoulder. Having the back to the target while rehearsing in slow motion is the way I have been working with this concept.

Of course there was a period of time when I sensed less power but like the others have mentioned, speed in the club head returned. My old sense of heaviness in the left arm/shoulder has shifted to the right arm/shoulder earlier in the downswing.

Here is my understanding of the tug, from the transition rotating hard with the upper body and letting the arms behind and then having to pull them to the ball. Guys who know what they are talking about please shoot this down or give it a thumbs up.

It's where and when you get at it hard. You can tug like crazy at the bottom (I know...sounds dirty but it's not).

Yes. You can add in lower body and even the arms can cause a tug--basically any movement(s) that disrupt the proper hand path early in the downswing, I would consider a tug.

An over-acceleration of ANY body part at any point, but specifically in transition (early tug) through the downswing until the club reaches about 7:30ish (late tug).

I'm no expert, but trust me I think I've managed to find LOTS of ways to tug.

Tugging after transition is like .... "burning rubber" and loosing traction at the start of yer downswing.

Think of your downswing like a ... top fuel dragster... and all you want to do is hold the tire torque at the start of the race with tangentially grippy tires and then let 'er rip to the end.... like this:

Do yah git' the feeeel...??!!!!
