Just a thought, but I think hitting shots with the ball back near the right foot, using a wedge, and hands way ahead, helps give that 'lag' feel..... try it, you'll start to feel that 'mop' feel a bit.

Note, keep it to shorter shots, inside 50 or so....

NEVER, EVER put the ball "back" in your stance....unless you want the ball to go to the right.

You CAN get the same type of impact with the ball forward...and hit better shots too!

TRY IT!

Brian, that is absurd..... ever hit a knockdown shot?

Putting the ball WAY back in your stance (off your right foot as you suggest) just makes it easier to CAST...it subconsciously encourages throwaway.

Do It Right...play the ball forward and drive your hands to your aiming point.

i guess if you want to hit the ball lower....go from a wedge to an eight iron and play the ball in the correct position (an inch inside your left heel)....same effect...right edz?

ed....if you play the ball back you HAVE to either aim left or hood the face.

yes, and hooding the face is what helps lead to the 'feel' of left hands ahead, which helps give the 'feel' of lag, assuming you keep that right wrist back. I would say, keeping the ball back AND still squaring the face, rather than 'hooding', which to me, implies that you have it closed to your final target.

Its a short swing drill, not a full swing.... perhaps I should have indicated the swing was more of a 'big chip'/punch

Mike - the reason to use a wedge and have it back, rather than an 8 iron forward, is that the more your hands are ahead, the better control you have (i.e part of the REASON that lag is good - pulling force vs. pushing force has better control, basic physics)

This gives the feel of proper compression and impact, not lag...

the more your hands are ahead, the more you have to compensate for a push...

so why over-do it?

How is it proper compression != lag?

Why overdo it? Because 90% of people have never felt proper compression.

What about when chipping ? I know Dave Pelz recomends that you have the ball way back in your stance when chipping.

hold the golf club in ur left hand. swing the club back and through. now, let the arm and club hang downward freely. THAT IS THE LOW POINT IN THE SWING.... the only way it is lower is if the left shoulder gets lower to the ground.

basically, the left arm always swings and it swings from the left arm pit. ideally, ur ball position should be one inch behind the low point to insure a downward blow to the ball.

simply, place ur ball position one inch behind ur left pit, one inch back from ur left heel, or under ur left ear. whatever is easier for u to identify.

moving ball position back in ur stance creates bad mechanics as Brian Manzella already stated.

u can hit a quality shot with the ball back in ur stance, but it should look like a push to u.

u can hit a quality shot with the ball forward in ur stance, but it should look like a pull to u.

IDEAL BALL POSITION+GOOD MECHANICS+GOOD ALIGNMENTS=GREAT GOLF SHOTS!!!!

It's a DRILL to allow people to feel what that downward contact is all about. I am not advocating this for normal shots.... big chip shot, if you will.

EdZ, ur drill will easily produce a downward blow to the ball. good thinking!!!

but remember this, BAD ALIGNMENTS CREATE BAD MECHANICS.

if u practice this drill u will train mechanics that eventually produce "THE RIGHTS"

how bout hittin balls with just ur right arm. focusing on a downward blow at a forward ball position and maintaining a bent right wrist (keeping the angle between the right forearm and clubshaft at and through impact)
this drill will give u the feedback of a lagging mash and train the right wrist.

Ed....

Davis didn't know he wasn't suppose to edit non-dirty post.

So sorry.

You said: Brian "GET OVER YOURSELF" it is just a drill.

My response is: I used it too until I knew that students learned educated hands FASTER and BETTER with a FORWARD ball position.

At least they do hit down on it, your way too.
