Bill Werbeniuk? Was that the guy who had to stop playing because they banned alcohol in snooker competitions?

With respect to alcohol on the course. I don't tend to play on courses that have lots of corporate outings.
I think you might find some beer cans on 'Pay&Play' courses where an England football shirt counts as proper golf attire ;-)

The 19th hole is of course different!

Sorry for the threadjack

Yep - that's the guy.

I get your drift about "pay and play" courses, but I grew up on a muni in the west of scotland, where England tops were probably outnumbered by the blue and white of Argentina! Otherwise, I think we're talking about a similar class of establishment.

I never really experienced much of a rush when I won (mostly pool tournaments). It was more like a "Huh, how about that" and that would be it. It was just a pool tournament, BFD.

Same goes for golf. I really could care less if I win, lose or draw. Just enjoy playing, how beautiful most golf courses are, watching a really great shot even if I didn't hit it, etc.

Weird I guess.

You listen to the golf scribes saying if someone doesn't win, he's defective or something. The whole "winning isn't everything, it's the only thing" thing. What really is the big deal? Validation? I'd love to have Charles Howell's bank account. Isn't that a form of "winning"? Honestly, I'd like to know the mindset of the hell-bent for winning player.

Sorry for the minor thread hijack but it's semi-related to OP's question.

I getcha. I remember being impressed by both van de velde and Thomas Levet during and after their respective brushes with open glory. Worse things could happen - and they seemed to appreciate that far more than, say, Colin Montgomerie.

Quite often. Especially in charity "scrambles". Only way to survive the darn things...which is why I quit playing in them. :)

I actually have a lot of fun playing in these tournaments with good friends of mine. However, you definitely have to approach with a totally different mindset. Otherwise, it can be a long, long day.

I am with you on that one. I enjoy playing good more then winning.

A golfing buddy of mine is very competitive. Everything is a competition for him. I always tell him that we can't compare our scores as I am not using a foot wedge :)

I just enjoy the weather, the view, every good shot.

Yup ... I'm just a "scratch" big bogey "diddler".... but I'm still a champion "scientific" golfer ....;)

Continuing with the intoxicant thread jack ...

I play in British Columbia, Canada. BC Bud, the first of the high octane weed strains, was perfected here. It is not unusual for a joint to be fired at the second hole. And not just kids. Many 50+ have medical problems that only cannabis can assuage.

Usually an immediate improvement in ball striking is apparent.

So should I toke
To help my stroke
But will I choke
My swing, a joke?!
