Two things are shockingly small in that video, the clubhead and Daly's waist.

I was hoping he would pull out a miraculous victory this week, good to see him in the hunt in a major.

What are some of the finer points you like about Daly's pivot?

Now a few diet cokes later

Great video - Thanks!

I forgot he ever looked like that.

Brian, what do you think of his pivot now?

I wish someone can post a video of Phillis Meti's swing and Brian can do an analysis. I saw her on the winning the women's Remax Long Drive Championship 2006 and am in awe.

She has a very very orthodox swing, hits drives of 326 yards, swing speeds of 125Mph. And she's just 19.

cheers.

She's got to be one of the top 3 longest women around, if not the longest. Her swing is very quiet looking, with excellent balance. Her pivot is similar to John Daly's in the above clip, but her legs are much more quiet.

BTW, that 326 yard drive she hit to win the worlds only rolled 10 yards. With her speed, and at her age, she's got a shot to be the female's version of Jason Zuback.

JD's swing is probably in my top five favorite swings. Would it be an accurate statement to say that bigger hitters tend to have better pivots? How does that relate to the number of strong to very strong grips you see in super long hitters?

Some Daly tidbits

While most know that JD is from Arkansas, he played and developed as a young teenager and a course near Fredericksburg, VA called Lake of the Woods. His dad was an engineer at the Lake Anna Nuclear Plant near there.

Lake of the Woods at that time was mostly a retirement community at that time and few of the male members would play with him (brash, cocky kid). There were several good women players there that would play golf with him.

He won the club championship there in 1980 at the age of 14 and moved away in March of 1981 back to Arkansas.

I became the Head Pro at Lake of the Woods in April 1981, so I missed him by a month. However, I was paired with JD in the 1st two rounds of the Kemper Open in 1991 (he won the PGA Champ later that year).

John could really bust it then, but the most amazing part of his game was incredible touch around the greens (interesting that he uses a very long swing relative to the length of the shot and sort of adjusts his speed as needed).

A lot of the members of Lake of the Woods walked the rounds with us. It is also interesting that John developed as a long hitter as Lake of the Woods is a short, tight course with lots of doglegs (typical development course)

John is really a likeable guy (I have seen him several times since) who has had problems handling his success.

Interesting Bruce....thanks.

John could really bust it then, but the most amazing part of his game was incredible touch around the greens (interesting that he uses a very long swing relative to the length of the shot and sort of adjusts his speed as needed).

I know I love how he does that. Goes past parallel with finessed short irons sometimes.

Just puts this massive smooth swing on it and then......THUMP.....dart.....

BTW Brian u told a story about John Daly on here once..............someone introduced you to him as "The Freak" as I remember. I couldn't find the write-up.

I still think it's funny that all those swing the clubhead, de la Torre/Ernest Jones types thinks that great swings just use hands and arms with no leverage or power from the pivot

I only bring this up because of where the Bobby Jones swing came from.

Good Story. I remember seeing JD up close on the driving range at Doral a dozen years ago (pre Tiger). He was hitting his 1 iron longer than anyones driver. He really mashed the ball looked like he hit straight down on it.

Great story, B. The thing is, like Brian mentioned, is that you expect some of these super long guys to look like defensive lineman; big, tall, bull necks. When I went to the Buick in MI, I was surprised at how little the players were; professional golfers are a small bunch. And Tiger and JD were a lot smaller than I expected. For one, Tiger isn't 6'2". And yeah, JD's overweight, but he's not a very big man. Same with Jason Zuback. You just don't expect so much distance from guys that small.
