BLOG: Not Enough Teaching Going On in "The Haney Project"

I really didn't write this to go over what goes on in the golf biz.

I like my spot, right where I am.

I am gaining ground on my term, in my way.

This BLOG is about the LACK of TEACHING that goes on at the so-called "top" of my profession.

Trust me, Hank is not holding ANYTHING BACK.

That's all he's got folks.

Okay, back to the subject at hand...sorry for the sidetrack. I like to ask the difficult to answer questions. Brian, we got it, method teachers are limited and in most cases not as good as someone that teaches an individual not a method. So, My favorite question is WHY?? You used to be a method teacher, I know why you changed. Why do you think others don't do the same? laziness, ignorance? Most of the top 100 have access to most, if not all of the info. you have. Why do you think they choose to ignore the information and not try to better themselves?

Great Question!

Why do you think others ("method teachers") don't do the same? laziness, ignorance? Most of the top 100 have access to most, if not all of the info. you have. Why do you think they choose to ignore the information and not try to better themselves?

What if you felt like your whole career was based on an idea, and then someone PROVED your idea to be DEAD WRONG. What would you do?

Keep on selling.

Well, I'd be pretty embarrassed, but then I'd pick myself up, admit I was wrong and ask the same question...WHY? and work my butt off to be better. Kinda sounds like the host:) Although, you aren't wrong much at all.

if that's all he's got, how will he fall off his perch? at some point, won't others in the biz see that as well and wonder about his abilities?

The top 50 or top 100 golf instructor list is FILLED with teachers who know LESS than Hank Haney. There's plenty of instructors who have some Tour Pros as students who know less than Hank.

None of these guys really fall of their perch because their name is so well established that it really doesn't matter anymore if they can't teach their way out of a wet paper bag.

well that's it in a nutshell they don't believe their wrong even if the proof is right in front of their eyes, it's called denial.that's the amazing thing about it they can always point to one of their successful tour pros and say look it works, when in reality that tour pro was probably going to be great no matter what.
and if i was one of those teachers who were dead wrong, to be truthful i'd keep selling, because i wouldn't know any better and i couldn't bear to start all over and loose my fame and status. which we all know self preservation is number one, teaching the right stuff has nothing to do with it, for some!:(

Brian,

It is a really old quote used by many top 100 but I love it.

"if all you have in your tool box is a hammer then everything looks like a nail"

Method teachers summed up in one quote......

Hank can't fix Sir Charles because his tool box just ain't big enough, why don't you let him borrow a few of your tools, on loan of course :)

That show is turning out like a bit of car crash TV, you know people are hurt, (egos in this case) and it's grusome, but you just can't stop watching

Could also be if Haney fixed CB in one episode they wouldn't have much of a show. TGC wants to keep this going as long as possible as it is probably the highest rated show they have ever done.

Medicine

Brian I know you can teach from 1st hand knowledge. What would you do to fix Sir Charles swing? How do you stop a hitch that bad?

Brian I was waiting for you to post on THP. Good job. :)

BTW yes...to whoever said it, "The Golf Fix" guy is loud. Annoying loud. And he points a lot.

I wonder if the golf channel/golf digest/magazine...etc.etc. sell the public this crap on purpose? These people must know this stuff doesn't work for the masses right? I mean I guess if you have a product that people don't think they need anymore, they won't buy it? So, why would you sell something that actually helps people with their games when you can keep screwing them AND make money...These guys are brilliant.

Hehe I have thought of this too singer.

Conspiracy Theory!

Hany said in tonight's show 4/13 that he thought he would have fixed/cured CB in one day. Then in the same shot he references that months have gone by, and that he's hoping he can fix him so that he (CB) doesn't quit the game.

Is it remotely possible, um, within the realm of possibility, that some people, maybe few and far between, are just not teachable? No matter who the teacher is? I have been to many pros over the course of 40 years of on and off golf, and I liked the teacher who gave options, and different suggestions based upon the outcome during the lesson, or over the course of two or more lessons. However, and maybe this is where Brian's "last resort instruction" comes in: teach the person to play the best they can with the unfixable(for whatever reason) fault. As a purely 20 or so handicapper, I did witness Charles hit a very few really good, long, shots, with his hitch. I even told a friend of mine-I wish I could have his late release when he crushes a ball, hitch and all!

I'd would like to know how to swing flatter (is it right palm away??) How would you get a student to swing flatter so the club is not way across the line at the top??

OLD THREAD

I'm a music teacher. It is possible in some cases, when teaching a physical skill like playing an instrument or playing golf, that a person may not be able to execute that skill in the way the teacher wants. I have found this to be the case countless times. I have a model of the "ideal" motion, BUT i know enough that sometimes that ideal is impossible for a particular student. I know enough to try different things to get the student to play and sound the way they need to, regardless of what it looks like. That is what Brian is talking about in his post.
