And that the left wrist doesn't have to be flat during the entire motion, from the waist up, a fairly 'Hogan' position.

X factor is useful only in that it 'can' help lead to proper sequence/lag on the downswing, not as a source of power, but a source of timing.

Yeah, I can't get over how cupped Bobby's left wrist is at the top. My fifteen year old son gets into a similar position. He even swings beyond parallel and sometimes bumps the top of his shoulder with the shaft. Jones is nearly doing it here.

In GM terms what plane is this? What grip and other components are needed to make this work?

Note that the clubface matches the forearm.... I suspect in your son's case, the toe is pointing more down (open). You need a stronger left hand grip (Jones) or serious forearm rotation (Hogan) to make this work (although in Hogan's case, his lead hand grip really took care of it - very 'solid' under the heel pad, and slightly in/across the palm).

From the angle of the photograph it's really hard to tell how well the clubface matches the left forearm. I told him most cuppers use a strong left hand grip. He just called and said it work pretty well and could even hit his 3 iron good.

Funny still had trouble with his metals and hits these low hooks like his old man.

That will tend to happen when using a stronger lead hand, but not having a flat left wrist at impact - break down of the lead wrist, throw away. With a stronger lead hand the back of the lead hand may not be facing the target, but it still should be flat through impact.
