There are some teachers that teach head movement.

There are some who teach none.

What do I teach?

I teach the student to use their Pivots to snap their Kinetic Chain, and to assist their arms, hands and club with creating the proper "D" Plane for the desired ball flight.

Period.

With some folks, like slicers, I like a pretty flat shoulder turn. The "Never Slice Again" pattern has the golfer turn around the point between their shoulders, which will ALWAYS make the head move as the spine rotates.

With other golfers and patterns, I like a steeper turn. Some of these patterns I look for very little head movement on the backswing.

Some—none.

The debate about whether the head or the point between the shoulders is the best swing center has been done on this forum dozens of times.

I feel I have won that debate, by leaps and bounds.

Do a search. :D

But...

I will answer the main points/questions right now:

How do you limit head movement?
If your head moves too far to the right on the backswing, you need to move your hips—as a unit—more to the right UNDER the head.

You probably need a steeper shoulder turn, but it is not necessary.

If you head move too far to the LEFT on the backswing, you need a much flatter shoulder turn, and sharper hip turn.

If you move your head to the right a bunch, do you need a lot of trigger delay?
Hell no.

See Curtis Strange, Lindsay Gahm.

Thanks Brian, my question had to do more with the downswing head movement than backswing head movement. I'd love to hear your thoughts on that. Thanks!

My problem is that I get my head and back heading toward the target too much on the downswing and I know that's not correct. Any tips for keeping the head and upper body back on the downswing? Thanks, Brian!

Brian,

I think I specifically said that if you sway a lot to the right and then the head stays put on the downswing similar to how Ben Doyle does it,then you will need a lot of trigger delay.

Lindsay does sway her head a bit on the backswing but it also moves back to the left on the downswing.Same with Curtis.

I think this move back to the left is what the OP is referring to.

Is is a bad thing?Hell no...they play pretty good.

It's not for everyone though.

Could that be to much lateral slide, or not enough axis tilt at impact?

How do the different colored lines relate to head movement? Is the yellow line where their left shoulder was at setup? I am pretty sure the red line is their tilt? I think the green line shows they are all behind the ball in the backswing. Anyone?
