Brians teaching philosophy?

Ringer,

I understand what you are saying and I think we mainly agree on the surface. I am saying that the word "wrong" is pretty cut and dry, therefore I do not use it. Unless of course it is theory, concept, misinformation type of thing like old ball flight laws.

Pretty bold to tell someone that what they are doing in their swing is "wrong".

If someone plays to a 30 handicap, is their swing wrong?

If someone plays to a +4, is their swing right? Just sayin...

I'm with you on this completely. Wrong is kind of a bad word but "different" doesn't exactly have the right emphasis either.

How about "Not the most efficient"?

Assuming the 30 hdcp can putt reasonably well why wouldn't you think their swing is "wrong" (barring any physical issues) if it can't produce any sort of result? Surely he/she isn't hitting 5 fw and 6 greens and producing that sort of hdcp. And if the +4 can putt reasonably well, wouldn't you think their swing is "right"? That golfer MUST be hitting a ton of fairways and greens.

Not sure why the issue with swings that are wrong or right..... for THAT player. Surely BM has some sort of "impact nirvana" that he wants his students to work towards. How he gets them there is up to him. Be it "zeroed out" or whatever, there must be some "cornerstone" or basic premis that he works with and bases his teaching on.

Efficiency as a description certainly works. How about effective or not effective? Or one that controls the ball as the operator desires. After all the main goal for most people is to have the ability to control the golf ball with the golf club...for others it may be to knock the white off the ball! The means by which that is done is of little consequence as long as it works as the person desires.

Well said Tom, good to see you on here. Ringer, I know we are saying the same thing, I guess I'm just a stickler for word choice.

Robbo, I'm just speaking in regards to absolutes and when teaching/coaching the word "wrong" is not the most conducive word to relationship building with the student. A high 'capper without major disabilities certainly is not making the most repeatable and effective golf swings to play to the best of their ability, although it is not wrong to play or swing that way. As for the +4 what if they make a bunch of compensations a la Furyk, Monty, Duval, Freddie, etc?? Is their swings right? how do we know they couldn't be better?

Looking forward to Brian's Teaching Philosophy.

I get it Dan, positive not negative. Come on Robbo get with it wake up...lol :)

Welcome, Tom.

Tom is a very good instructor with a strong reputation in our neck of the woods.

Maybe if we get a few more members from the area, Brian might make it farther into GA than Hartsfield Int'l.:)

I have sold out every ATL tour-stop I ever did.

I will glad to go back and probably will this year.

Tom is a very nice guy, and we are glad to have him around.

Dammit GF.... can't you let me make an ass of myself without bringing it to attention of the entire forum?! ;) I know, I know.... that 30 hdcp remark I made hit a bit close to home. :)

Hope you're doing well,

My Philosophy....

I started teaching Lindsay Gahm in 2000, when she was 8.

She never had a lesson from anyone else except for Chris Hamburger all of those years.

I never started with the idea that here swing would evolve into the one she has now.

This is HER golf swing. I helped a lot, but I went with what worked for her every step of the way.

Now I tried everything you ever thought of with her, but this is the stuff that stuck and worked.

I get the hives thinking about what would have happened if I would have not learned all the things I have in the last 6 years.

I'd have ruined her.

So, here is a Top 10 of Brian Manzella's Teaching Philosophy:

1. The ball don't lie, the scores don't lie, and the ball only knows what the clubhead told it.
2. Nobody learns in a straight line.
3. Listen to the student, they know. They don't know what they know, but they know.
4. Timing is very individual, work with their natural rhythm.
5. A straight ball will beat a curve everyday of the week. But a two way miss won't beat anyone.
6. They ain't making courses any shorter. Make you students long enough, not everyone makes every 10 footer.
7. The student ONLY NEEDS TO KNOW WHAT THEY NEED TO KNOW.
8. Plane Angle means less than nothing.
9. Design a whole teaching program around each student.
10. It has to be better today. And NEVER take a short cut. Yes you can do both.

:)

Sounds good Brian.

One question on point seven. Do different students need to know different amounts, or do you have a set amount of information distributed to all students?

If you had been coaching me since I was eight, I don't think I would need to know very much. Nowadays, as a first time student with a head full of junk, I might need to know more. Or less if the ball is telling me what I need to know (per point one)!

Awsome Bmanz,
I think if I were to look for the example of the perfect philosophy for a teacher this would be it!
But for me #10 is the gospel. nothing says a teacher sucks more than when a student leaves a lesson as bad or worse then when they got there!
