From the Golfweek article on Bubba's grip specs:

'So, believe it or not, here is the inside story on Bubba’s unusual grips: He plays Ping’s 703 Gold grip, which is a rubber grip made by Golf Pride. It is oversized by one-32nd of an inch. After that, his grip setup gets pretty weird.

On the top half of the shaft, Rollins installs 10 layers of tape. On the bottom half, he installs 12 layers. One complete layer of tape goes around all that."

It could be argued that the extra 2 layers of tape on the bottom half is done to "mould" to his lower left hand, and thus in contravention of the Rules of Golf wherein it is stated:

"... The grip shall be straight and plain in form, shall extend to the end of the shaft, and shall not be moulded for any parts of the hands....."

Ooops, are Bubba's grips non-conforming to the Rules of Golf ....Ya think..???!!!!!

Um, no.

I didn't know that duckjr was on the Rules of Golf Equipment Committee... go figure ....

I'm not. You posted something that you already know the answer to, so the only reason for you to have posted that was to be an instigator. So I answered you as such.

When the Rules of Golf talk about molded grips, could they be talking about these? lol

Of course, if you read Appendix II, grips with a bulge and waist are illegal too.

He's removing some of the taper. Nothing non-conforming about non-taper grips.

Good point, even I do that to compensate for shaft steps under the grip to reduce the extra taper, but I don't build it up beyond that.

A lot of player build up under the bottom hand... it's been used longer than graphite shafts and metal woods.

The issue is did Bubba build up the bottom half of his grip to create a larger grip upset diameter to individually mould to and assist his lower left hand.

The only way to resolve this if for the authorities to measure his grips to determine if they are conforming or non-conforming, now that we know he builds up the bottom half of his grip by 2 extra wraps.

It's now public knowledge through the Golfweek article, and the Rules question is legitimate. What say you?

Without knowing the specifics of the taper of the shafts he's using, I doubt that two extra wraps under the bottom hand would create a "bulge," as I've done the same thing in the past on my own clubs (no longer) and never saw, nor felt, a bulge...just less taper.

I have also put a "bulge" into the bottom half of the grip thinking it would help my bottom right hand "hammer" the club into the ball.

Erroneous concept ... because you can't possibly hammer the ball through impact with your lower right hand ... and besides that would destroy your attempt to "go normal" too.

So why does Bubba build up his grip with 2 extra layers of tape under his lower right hand... that's the mystery.

I too use a ribbed grip and make sure it is "twisted" to help ensure I don't take too a grip.

By twisting the reminder rib under your grip, you are definitely "moulding" the club to your hands.... and thus a non-conforming alteration.

The grip rib must be kept straight throughout it's length to conform to the Rules of Golf.

It's still straight, just not at the six o'clock position--which is why I put twisted in quotes. Hogan used a leather lace under his grips as a reminder to have a strong left hand grip and a weaker right hand grip which was not in a straight line under the grip. Maybe you need write a letter and have all his wins taken away due to non conforming grips:)
