butt cheek on wall

If I place my right butt cheek against a wall and make a backswing pivot (with clothes on), I was wondering what to expect to feel. Mine has a sway feel, it just sort of rolls against it without sliding in any direction until transition where it slides forward against the wall, then comes off at impact. I hear alot about establishing a wall on the inside of the right leg and turning into it, without any sway at all, not even an inch. When I try this against a wall, my right butt cheek slides towards the target in my backswing!

With regard to the back swing, shouldn't your hips turn about 45 degrees? Which means that your right cheek should move further to the rear than you were at Address. Therefore, shouldn't you set up a little away from the wall to allow for the turning of the hips? The right cheek would contact the wall at full hip coil; then, at transition the first thing you would feel is the right butt cheek coming off the wall as the hips lead you into impact.

Come to think of it, this might be a good drill to teach someone that the hips lead into the downswing and through impact.

I agree with you on the first bit of your post but not this. At transition the hips will bump about 2" left and will still be in contact with the wall before turning. I use a chair when hitting balls as a drill to get this feel.

Yes, good point, Hue. I was referring to TGM Standard Hip Action, where there is a hip turn only, but no slide. However, one of the variations is the Slide (slide, turn back; slide turn through). So, if one is a Swinger and uses the Slide variation, the cheek will slide along the wall [I'm not sure if a Hitter would slide along the wall, since Hitters use an Angle of Approach more toward right field back to the ball]. But, your point is well taken -- most modern instructors teach the slide and most players will probably slide a little before the hip comes off the wall.

at least you weren't working on doing the rod and the claw, aka Bertholy's swing pipe. Or Brian's seat cane. I still haven't found a place to do that one.

I just wanted to let you know that my secretary walked in on me practicing this drill and now I feel like an idiot.

Hilarious. However, it's not too bad if you were able to charge a client for the "research" time. :D
