Can't load steeper swing, but can load flatter

You guys have seen my miserable flail at the ball here:

and yes, I have many issues, but the one I am having trouble with now is that I am way too flat. You should be able to discern that from the clip. However, when I attempt to steepen, I lose all feel for loading the shaft and I throw it away.

this flatter swing is great for hitting off a tee or a nice perched fairway lie. I actually hit neat looking sling shot push draws with it. but I am really thinning my longer irons if they aren't sitting nice and pretty. thus I think I need to steepen my swing.

So why am I able to really load the shaft with the flat swing, but I am throwing away the steeper, more on plane, swing?

Someone told you to take 2 asprin from the Lagging Clubhead Takeaway bottle and you took the whole bottle.

Your LCT is setting you up at the top with tremendous lag that you have to get rid of in your downswing.

Therefore you need a large lateral shift to the target to buy yourself time and space to get rid of the lag you (somewhat artificially) produced.

That large lateral shift will lead to a shallow approach to the ball and make it difficult to consistantly find low point.

New prescription for you: Just 2 LCT asprin and stabilize the top of your spine.

You are a good enough athlete to learn how to deal with a reduced amount of lag without throwing it away. Your sequencing is great. You need to tone down the LCT.

When I had posted that clip a couple of weeks ago, I was playing around with other patterns. I believe this clip below shows less LCT, but actually looks flatter, although its a different view. These are my only two patterns I can get around the course with. Both way too shallow.

Does your comment still hold true? I was thinking, that I was just too bent over, but when I stand more upright, my shoulders set flatter and I thin the ball even worse. My more loaded flat swing produces 150 yard nine irons. My more thrown away steep swing produces 130 yard nine irons.

What I noticed in the 2nd swing is that you almost pick up the left foot and replant it in the downswing. I think that you loose too much of your torque/energy that is initially created.

I know that the grass is kind of long, but it does seem like you kind of quit on it through impact. Probably a result of the left foot pick up.

Went back to the 1st vid, and you do it a little there too.

I'd work with the 2nd swing, without loosing your leverage by picking up and replanting the left foot.

If you have to "roll" the left foot just slightly on the backswing, the heel may come up slightly, but don't loose your leverage on the ball of the left foot.

Hmmm...it's hard since they are different angles, etc. and at the risk of confusing you, here are my 2p:

1. I AGREE with savydan's diagnosis of the first swing.
2. HOWEVER, I disagree with his conclusion: I like the first swing a LOT better. The second swing looks terribly flippy to me: you really just throw the clubhead ahead with all right wrist at and through impact.
3. I'm not quite sure that you have big "too flat" worries. The second swing (which is the only one from behind) doesn't look too flat or underplane to me.

I think you are hitting it thin because you are flipping it. Try hitting some pitches and chips with a flat left wrist, focusing on maintaining a little of that lag that you easily create and TURNING through the ball. I'm not sure you need to worry about switching to a steeper plane. I see a LOT of good stuff in that first swing.

He may not pick up and replant his left foot when he hits pitches and chips.

Flippiness may have something to do with the pivot/left foot.

I agree that the downswing plane does not look too shallow.

He asked for opinions and that's what fronesis and I did.

And we happened to agree. What's the problem in that?

I don't think that flipping is causing the thins. Here is the front view and you can capture a little downswing lag.

I may throw it out a bit before impact. But I don't think its the cause. As for my left foot, I sprained my left ankle real bad and it can not withstand the torque of my downward swing without spinning out.

In my opinion, there's your Cause. You can pick your Effect that leads to the thins.

I have a crazy idea. Why not turn your left foot out at address to where it ends up in the downswing.

I'd say I agree (because I do), but I fear that might get me in trouble from others. ;)
