Club Bounce at Top: How do you stop it?

I kinda thought after watching some Sam Snead clips that I was on my way to making a similar move. Cool!

Thanks for the direction Jim. Yeah, I thought NSA looked like it might be a bit too extreme of changes. I'll get Flipper and Soft Draw. I definitely hit the 85% barrier with my current swing. Can't actually swing much harder or I start sacrificing the entire swing form. Probably because at this point the swing uses too much arms and not enough pivot (if I understand correctly). I remember from 5 Lessons that Hogan said he hit best when he swung hard. I often wondered how he could swing so hard, yet hit so good, as modern "pop" teaching says you can't have both (lies!).

I'll keep yall updated. Pretty sure I'll have questions along the way. :D

Also noticed in that video how bad my posture is setting up to the ball. Killing my pivot. Gonna get that fixed right away.

About that problem at the top, I cannot tell in the video but,

YOUR LEFT THUMB SHOULD BE DIRECTLY UNDER AND SUPPORTING THE CLUB AT THE TOP OF YOUR SWING.

Also, a grip that is close to neutral and a 90 degree rotation will produce a cupped left wrist at the top. There's nothing wrong with that. Works for me.

incorrect, the left thumb should be in a position that best supports what you are trying to achieve at impact and it will also change based on what type of grip you use and how flat/cupped/arched your left wrist is at the top of the swing.

define your definition of cup? in a PERFECTLY NEUTRAL grip, one where the back of the left hand matches the scorelines on the face the left wrist ill be perfectly flat, as you go stronger with your grip it will go from perfectly flat to basically a "fist" and after that various degrees of "cupping."

Video of the swing on youtube:

Already see many things I don't like, but I'm gonna leave analysis up to brian and the other instructors here on the board. Some really wierd compensations going on, and I don't see how I hit the ball as far as I do (distances on the video comments, actual measured not imagined :D).

For reference, those swings were about 80% power, and yes, my car was sitting on a slope, so I am actually standing level but the camera is tilted (sorry).

If you guys need it slowed down, I can do that. Original is at 30FPS, so not the greatest slow motion captures.

BTW, I wasn't trying to restrain the wrists at all in these swings. Just my normal grooved motion.

Oh we have work to do...

The only reason you cross the line at the top IMO is that your arms travel too much and too aggressively and you turn too much. It gives the appearence of a soft draw backswing but really isn't. The cup in the wrist is just you trying to acheive some height in your backswing, otherwise that club would be hanging under your hands much like it does right before impact(the reason you slice your long clubs). I would love to see you tighten up your pivot, move the handle of the club first and "carry" a mid body hands feel all the way to the top so you can slot that club better and get that armswing under control a little.

Kevin,

What do you mean exactly by "mid-body hands feel"? I'm a bit confused. You want me to try and just turn, keeping the hands more or less level and passive? Wouldn't that result in the club just wrapping further around me?

Got CFF and SD last night. I'm going to start working on CFF just as an impact refresher.

I grip the club now rather strong with the left hand (3 knuckles, V at right shoulder, if that makes any difference. Maybe affecting my swing in a negative way. Might try getting more neutral, although I find that really difficult at the moment as it seems to require more grip and arm strength to support the club.

Good question. I'm sorry not to clarify. The feel im going after is your pivot carrying your arms so you dont get all that early roll. You still need arm lift. I just think, as Jim does too, that your swing is too armsy. Watch SD video and you'll see the backswing.

Ah ok. That's what I thought you were saying. I think right now I have a left hand trying to swing up with a dumb right hand and arm trying to swing around, making a really wierd backswing move.

Watching SD now... dang that swing is like Nicklaus!

Correction:

My left thumb is not directly under the club at the top. It is actually on my swing plane. In this position it supports the force of the backswing momentum and the first part of the downswing.
