club fitting question

Can someone give me some information on how much lie angle matters?

I'm pretty short, 5'6, and choke down on all of my irons about an inch to two inches. Do I really need irons that are 2 degrees flat, or by choking down, am I effectively changing the lie of the club?

I'm thinking of trading in my old shovels (Ping G2's) and getting a set of Mizuno MP 60's or MP 62's.

Thanks for your help.

Tball,

It is all relative, to your swing etc.

However, by choking down you are flattening the lie angle and somewhat stiffening the effective shaft flex.

It seems club length is your real issue. This might also fix the lie angle issue; now shaft flex becomes a new variable. You really need to be fitted by a pro that understands how to read lie angles and swing dynamics. Good luck at finding one though.

Thanks Steve,

I don't know if it means anything, but my misses are mostly left and typically are what I would call face pulls.

also my divot typically finishes with this type of look "/" althought not quite to that extent.

Would that be a sign that the clubs could be too upright?

Could be too upright. Find someone that can dynamically fit you.

You can do it yourself. Put some masking tape on the bottom of a club (like a 7 iron) and hit balls off of a range mat or a board, just make sure your feet are at the same level as the surface you are hitting off of. Put a piece of tape or chalk or something that will leave a mark on the face of the club also. Check the marks after each swing and see where the sole is hitting the ground when you make a CENTER FACE contact. Towards the heel, too upright...towards the toe, too flat...in the middle, they are O.K.

Spot on! Right Tom, Tball just needs to also put some tape on the lie board to ensure he is not hitting them fat: as fat shots will give a false lie mark reading (an issue that most 'pop' clubfitters will never understand - LOW POINT v LIE MARKS)

What sort of reading do you get from fat shots off the lie board Stevie. Would you get a mark that is "centred" (ie Mid-sole), hence think it is a good reading, but what has actually happened is you have moved low point to far back and then the club has skidded into the ball.

Fat shots on the lie board will generally be larger marks and more to the heel and trailing edge than non-fat shots.

There are plenty

Tball is lucky because he has many quality teacher/fitters in his area. I think I told him about his clubs a year ago.
